The next afternoon, Aiden sat at Rosa's kitchen table, tracing the rim of his mug with a fingertip. The smell of cinnamon and vanilla filled the air — Rosa's signature comfort tea. It was the kind of smell that made you feel like everything would be okay, even when you weren't sure what okay meant yet.
Rosa watched him quietly for a moment before speaking. "You've been sitting there thinking for fifteen minutes," she said softly, a hint of amusement in her voice. "That's either a new record or a new problem."
Aiden smiled faintly. "Maybe both."
She set her cup down. "So what's the problem, cariño?"
Aiden hesitated, then sighed. "James... wants another kid."
Rosa's brows lifted, but her expression stayed warm. "Oh?"
"Yeah," Aiden said, his tone gentle, uncertain. "He asked if I'd be okay with it. Before I have bottom surgery."
Rosa leaned back, thinking. "And what did you say?"
"I didn't say no." Aiden exhaled, staring at the swirling tea in his mug. "I just... I don't know. Part of me wants to. We're in a better place now, Gabriel's older, and we've learned so much. But part of me..." His voice softened. "Part of me just wants to move forward with my body, you know? To feel whole in the way I've been wanting for years."
Rosa nodded, her eyes kind. "You don't have to pick right now. But if you do, whatever choice you make is the right one — as long as it's yours."
Aiden smiled weakly. "You always know what to say."
She grinned. "I've had practice. Being a mom means learning how to listen when words don't come easy."
Just then, Lake and Mariana walked in — Lake balancing a notebook, Mariana carrying a tray of empanadas. "We heard there was serious talk happening," Lake said playfully. "And snacks are mandatory for that."
Aiden chuckled. "You two have great timing."
They all settled around the table, the air growing lighter as Lake passed around the food. It didn't take long before she asked, "So, what's the big talk?"
Aiden hesitated again, but Rosa gave him an encouraging nod. "James wants another kid," he said finally.
Lake's eyes widened. "Another? Wow. Gabriel's barely stopped calling me Aunt Lake the Superhero."
Mariana smiled, resting her chin on her hand. "And how do you feel about it?"
"That's the problem," Aiden said softly. "I don't know. I think about the sleepless nights and the stress — and the dysphoria I went through last time. But then I think about how much love we have, how much Gabriel brought into our lives. And I get scared I'll regret saying no."
Lake leaned forward, serious now. "Aiden, I think the important thing is that it's your body, your peace. If the idea makes you tense, you owe it to yourself to listen to that feeling. But if there's even a spark of 'yes' in you — that's worth listening to too."
Mariana reached over and covered Aiden's hand with hers. "You've built something beautiful with James. You don't owe anyone more — but if you want more, that's okay too. Just... make sure it's for you."
Rosa smiled softly, adding, "And don't forget, no matter what, you'll have all of us. Babysitting, late-night calls, tears, laughter — we'll be there."
The reassurance hit Aiden harder than he expected. His eyes stung a little as he smiled at all three of them. "You guys really are the best."
Lake grinned. "We know. Now, are we going to overanalyze baby names for a hypothetical child, or is that too soon?"
They all laughed, and Aiden felt the tension lift from his shoulders, if only a little.
For the first time since James had asked, Aiden didn't feel trapped between two impossible choices. Instead, he felt surrounded — by people who understood, who loved him, who'd be there no matter which path he took.
And that, he realized, was what family really meant.
