"An architect is only as marvellous as their creations."
The figure slid a piece forward. Not quite human behind dull eyes that never needed to see. Not quite a man either.
"Does that mean we have failed, Anarys?" Another voice spoke softly, inquisitively, yet already knowing the answer. "The knight in shining armour arrives."
The Figure and the Voice collided across the board. A horse and its rider—the glorious union of nature and ambition that gave birth to the ideal of chivalry, charged at a lonely pawn.
"Yes, Sybil. But not truly." The Figure's tone was heavy with the burden of inevitability. It slid the pawn forward once more, and it traced the hard edge of the board. "Good things can be bad. Everybody forgets the underdog, and the true sin of the universe is underestimation."
The wooden piece grew like a sprout under the grace of spring, until it was crowned. As mighty as the Gods themselves, the scope of its power was now unparalleled.
"The lowly pawn, born to be sacrificed, lived to be forgotten. We will endow it with our powers. Its already limitless potential will become infinite," The Figure spoke. "Our creation will be the ultimate good that pushes back the evil."
The Voice sighed. "So be it."
