"Don't stop running. Don't let them get you."
I kept repeating the words in my head over and over as I ran. The winter air was cold against my bare arms and legs.
"Don't stop running. Don't let them get y-"
I tripped over a rock and fell on the ice. "No- no! Please- no," I whispered to myself before I tried to get up. Someone grabbed my shoulder, making me scream of fear. I should've seen where I was going. My eyes became watery with salty tears. They were going to take me back.
"Hey! Calm down! Are you okay?"
I shook my head and almost fell to the ice again because I was so relieved. I didn't recognise his face. He wasn't anyone working for my kidnappers. "Shit- Shit! I need to run," I muttered to myself whilst I got up from the ice and started running again. I had hit my leg on the rock when I tripped but the pain wouldn't stop me. Not this time. I would never let anything make me go back.
"Don't stop running. Don't let them get you."
I'd started whispering the words to myself as I ran as fast as I could.
It's hard to run on ice without your feet slipping, but I kept running until I thought they'd lost me. I had been running for hours without seeing a single building, or anyone apart from whoever asked me if I was okay. After a few more minutes I could finally see signs of life. There were buildings and cars driving.
Even though I was completely out of breath I was still walking. I walked until I physically couldn't anymore, and I collapsed next to a wall of a really tall building. I was freezing. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all, not in this weather. I wrapped my arms around myself in hopes to feel warmer. I was going to freeze to death out here. But still, that would've been better than going back.
"Hey! Are you okay?" I recognised the voice from earlier. Did he follow me all the way here? If he could follow me here, then so could the people who I feared.
I stared at the busy street in front of me, then looked to the guy who had been speaking to me.
He stated the obvious, "It's cold out". My eyes closed automatically from pure exhaustion. I let out a shaky breath when I felt something on me. I couldn't react physically, but I was screaming inside my head. Maybe I should've been scared of him after all. Perhaps he was going to take me back.
I took a deep breath in and opened my eyes slowly. I noticed that what I'd felt on me was a coat. The man who had spoken to me was now sitting next to my feet. He had given me his coat.
"You'll... f- freeze," I managed to get out. I sat up and held out his coat to him.
He shook his head. "I don't freeze. Keep it!" In the moment I didn't notice he said "don't" instead of "won't."
I was hesitant for a moment but then I put on the coat and felt a bit warmer. Maybe I weren't going to freeze to death after all. I wanted to thank him, but I couldn't. My sharp short breaths were like knives poking my lungs and throat.
He stood up and smiled at me. "Come with me," he said. "I'll help you." He held out his hand to me. I looked at him for a second before I took his hand and stood up. It took a while to stand because I was so exhausted from running. "My flat is not too far from here. Do you think you can walk a bit?" he asked me. I nodded even though my head wouldn't move that much. He hummed and then started walking.
He held me by my waist as we walked so I wouldn't fall. In my weak state there was a big chance that could happen. I weren't held in the way I was used to, which was nice, but panic was still flooding through my brain.
He was silent the rest of the walk. The only sounds I could hear was my breathing, the busy street, the sound of his shoes on the concrete and the few winds that flew past.
We soon got to his flat and he let me sit on his couch whilst he cleaned off the blood on my knee from when I fell on the ice. I hadn't noticed the blood until he pointed it out and offered to clean it.
"So why were you running earlier?" he asked after turning off the sink where he washed the blood off the towel he used. He leaned on the doorway from the kitchen into the living room.
How could I explain my situation? After a few seconds of silence I just shrugged my shoulders. I wanted to say everything, everything that had happened to me in the past four months. I wanted someone to know it all.
He nodded in an understanding way and asked, "Do you want coffee?" He stepped back into the room fully and stood next to the couch. I nodded my head. Maybe Something warm was what I needed to make my throat less sore. He nodded and left the room again.
He came back a few minutes later with two cups in his hands. He gave me one and the sudden warmth almost made me drop the cup. But he didn't seem to react to the temperature of the cups. Just like how he hadn't reacted to the cold weather outside.
"So what's your name?" he asked me with a polite smile. I almost forgot that I had a name after I was kidnapped. They never cared enough to call me by my name. Actually, they never cared would probably be a better way to word it. They never cared about anything but themselves, the tests and the blood.
"Allison," I whispered. I wasn't strong enough to speak louder. I smiled back at him, though it didn't reach my eyes. That was the first time I had said my name in four months and 6 days.
"My name is Michael," he said. "But you can call me Mikey." I nodded so he knew I'd heard.
"I'll go get you a blanket, so you don't catch a cold." He stood up. I knew that it wasn't the actually cold that made you catch a cold, but I didn't feel like pointing it out.
When he left the room I looked around. His flat was really tidy, it almost looked like nobody lived here. There was a bookshelf next to a small TV. I walked up to it and read the titles on the books. Most of them I did not recognise, some I had heard of, and one I really enjoyed reading a few years ago. There was a picture frame in the bookshelf. Before I could take a look at the picture Mikey came back with a blanket in hand.
"You should let your leg rest as much as possible while it heals," he said and stood next to me. He pointed to the picture frame in the bookshelf and my eyes followed his finger. "That's me and my brother."
I knew I'd seen his brother's face before somewhere but I didn't want to seem like a creep, so I didn't say anything. He looked at me in a way that made it seem like he could see right through me and read my mind. The thought of that made me shiver.
"Are you still cold?" he asked. I didn't want to explain why I shivered and I was still quite cold, so, I nodded. He gave me the blanket he was holding and told me to sit down. I sat back down on the couch and sipped on my coffee that was now cold enough to drink without burning my tongue.
I knew I weren't anywhere close to home. I didn't recognise a single building I'd seen. And nothing in Mikey's accent showed any similarities to mine. How would I get home with no money? My family probably thought I was dead. Or maybe they're dead.
