The hallway smelled faintly of rust and boiled cabbage. Geu Rae paused at the entrance, suitcase handle sweating in his grip, and stared down the narrow passage that seemed to stretch longer than it should. Doors lined each side like crooked teeth, their paint cracked, their numbers faded to smudges. Somewhere deep inside, a television droned, its static voice seeping through the walls like water through stone.
“Eden Goshiwon,” the landlord had called it. A place to begin again. A place cheap enough to forget the past and survive the present.
But as Geu Rae stepped forward, the overhead light flickered, and the corridor swallowed the sound of his footsteps.
He reached his room—201—barely wider than his outstretched arms. The wallpaper peeled at the corners, curling like old skin. A thin mattress waited on a steel frame. The window, too small to matter, showed nothing but a brick wall inches away.
Geu Rae set down his bag, exhaled, and tried to convince himself that this was temporary. Just a room. Just four walls.
Yet as he sat on the bed, the silence pressed in, heavy and unnatural, until he realized it wasn’t silence at all. Behind the paper-thin walls, someone was breathing. Slowly. Deliberately. Listening.
