Chapter One: The Dreamer's Awakening

The morning sun slipped through the lace curtains, brushing Veronica Rena's cheeks with a warmth that coaxed her from sleep. For a moment, she lingered in that hazy state between dreams and reality, half expecting to still be wandering through emerald valleys and golden meadows. She could almost hear the murmur of a river and the distant call of a horn echoing through the hills.

Then, with a sigh, she opened her eyes. The familiar scent of woodsmoke clung to the rafters above her. She was in her grandparents' cottage, just as she had been for the last seventeen years of her life.

The world of her dreams felt so much brighter than this one-so alive. Yet it was only that: a dream.

She rolled out of bed, brushed the dust from her skirt, and tied her hair back with a ribbon. "Another day," she whispered to herself. Another day of feeding the hens, gathering herbs, and listening to her grandfather's stories of knights and kingdoms long past.

"Veronica!" Her grandmother's voice floated from the kitchen. "The fire needs more wood!"

"Yes, Lola!" Veronica called back, grabbing her basket and stepping outside. The air was crisp, tinged with the scent of pine and earth. Chickens pecked lazily in the yard, and beyond the fence stretched the same quiet fields she had known all her life.

She knelt by the woodpile, stacking logs into her basket. But as she did, her gaze drifted toward the horizon. She had always dreamed of more-of faraway castles and adventures beyond the hills. And though she loved her grandparents dearly, a restless ache had taken root in her chest.

Why do I always dream of that place? she wondered. It feels so real.

That night, the dreams returned, stronger than ever. She walked along a silver river, its surface glimmering under the light of two moons. A castle rose in the distance, its towers crowned with banners that shimmered in the starlight. She felt the grass beneath her bare feet, heard the rustle of leaves in the night wind. Every sense was sharpened, alive.

And then she saw him.

A man stood at the edge of the forest, cloaked in shadow, watching her. His dark hair caught the moonlight, and a sword glinted at his back. His eyes were steady, piercing, as though he knew her. As though he had always known her.

Veronica's breath caught. She wanted to speak, to ask his name-but the dream dissolved into a whirl of color, pulling her away before she could utter a word.

She woke with a start. But this time, the sunlight that greeted her was too bright, the air too sharp, the grass beneath her hands too real.

Veronica sat up abruptly. Her heart thudded in her chest.

She was not in her bed. Not in her grandparents' cottage.

She was lying in a forest glade, sunlight filtering through the leaves above. The air smelled of wildflowers and damp earth. And when she looked ahead, her breath caught in her throat.

The valley stretched endlessly before her. Rivers wove like silver threads through the hills, and far in the distance rose a castle identical to the one in her dreams.

Her hands trembled. "This... this can't be real."

"You shouldn't wander alone in this forest."

The voice was low, steady, and carried an edge of warning. Veronica turned sharply.

He was there-the man from her dreams.

Dark hair framed his face, his features both sharp and striking. His armor gleamed faintly beneath a forest-green cloak, and a sword rested easily against his back. His presence was commanding, but his eyes held a quiet strength that unsettled her even more than the blade he carried.

Veronica's lips parted, but no words came.

The man studied her silently for a moment before speaking again. "You are not from here."

She swallowed hard, shaking her head. "I... I don't know how I got here. One moment I was asleep, and the next..." She gestured helplessly to the valley. "I woke up here."

His expression softened slightly, though his voice remained firm. "What is your name?"

"Veronica. Veronica Rena."

"Veronica..." He repeated it as though testing the sound. "I am Gerdo Aldino. Guardian Angel of this realm."

Her eyes widened. Guardian Angel?

Gerdo's gaze sharpened. "You said you do not know how you arrived here. But I do. You are the Dreamer."

"The Dreamer?" she echoed.

"Yes." He took a step closer, the sunlight glinting off the metal clasps of his armor. "There is a prophecy that speaks of a maiden from another world. She will see this realm in her dreams until the day she is called to awaken within it. When the shadow rises, only she can bring balance."

Veronica shook her head in disbelief. "That-that can't be me. I'm just an ordinary girl. I live with my grandparents, I feed chickens, I've never-"

"Ordinary?" Gerdo cut in, his eyes piercing into hers. "You crossed the veil between worlds. That is no ordinary feat."

Her mouth went dry. Crossed the veil? Prophecy? Balance? None of it made sense. Yet everything around her-the valley, the castle, even the man standing before her-felt so tangible, so alive.

"I don't understand," she whispered.

"You don't need to. Not yet." His voice softened, though his gaze remained steady. "But you must trust me. The realm is changing. Darkness stirs in the east. If the prophecy is true, you are here for a reason. And I will protect you until we find it."

Veronica stared at him, torn between fear and wonder. She had spent years dreaming of this world, longing for something more than her quiet life. And now that it was here, it was overwhelming. Terrifying.

And yet... a part of her thrilled at his words.

"Why me?" she asked softly.

Gerdo's lips curved in the faintest smile. "That is what we must discover."

He extended a hand toward her.

Veronica hesitated. Then, with a deep breath, she placed her hand in his. His grip was strong, grounding, and for the first time since waking in this strange new world, she felt a flicker of safety.

"Come," he said. "The castle will have answers. But we must move quickly. Shadows travel faster than light."

As they began their journey down the winding path, Veronica glanced back once more at the forest clearing where she had awakened. The sunlight danced through the leaves, whispering of beginnings she could never have imagined.

She tightened her grip on Gerdo's hand.

Whatever this world was, whatever destiny awaited her-her life would never be ordinary again.
