Chapter Twenty Seven: A jester vs an evil bunny

Start from the beginning

I raised an eyebrow. "What kind of things did you use to post?"

She shrugged. "A bunch of different things. Mainly exploring videos. Like, exploring abandoned towns or different caves. Y'know, stuff like that. Nothing too interesting. Oh, I was also an accountant, too, at one point. I forgot where I used to be an accountant, but I remember being pretty good at it. Pretty boring, I know, but...it gave me this weird sense of security, y'know?"

I nodded along with her question, though my life wasn't nearly as cool as hers. Sure, I have some things I'm good at, especially when it comes to computers and programming, but that's really it. "Yeah, I get it. What made you want to work at a game testing company, though? Since that's what brought us to this digital world, right?"

"I dunno. I wanted to try something new that seemed like it would be fun, at the time. Video games weren't always my thing, mainly because I sucked and have, like, zero talent. Though, I love trying new things that made me feel something different, and it seemed fun. It was something new and I remember the pay wasn't that bad. But now I wish I read the fine print before accepting the job, obviously, since now I'm trapped in this colorful purgatory."

Pomni looked down, a solemn look crossed her face as she seemed to be thinking things through a bit. A soft sigh leaves her lips before she continues speaking. "S-Sorry for making this so...depressing, suddenly. Um, what jobs did you have? Or, what things did you like to do back in the real world?"

I thought about her question for a moment, since I knew she would ask that eventually. It was only common courtesy, especially after I asked her those same questions. "You don't need to apologize, I'm the one that asked, so don't worry. While, to answer your question...I never did anything too interesting. I stayed home most of the time, or I screwed around with my computer with a friend of mine. We were never that close, but they're also pretty tech savvy, so it kinda became our 'thing' after a while. They were always better at it than me, though. Besides that, I never did much of anything. The reason why I took this job in the first place was because I needed the money. Plus, things were going to sh*beep* quickly. My rent was overdue and I desperately needed a job, so the same tech savvy friend found this video game testing opportunity and I took it without thinking first. Then the first game they wanted me to test came at my doorstep, and...now I'm stuck here."

She raised an eyebrow. "You were sent the game? You didn't have to...like, go inside a 'personalized' office like I did?"

I nodded my head slowly. "Yeah. I asked the manager if I could just work at home, since that was what I was best at and I don't really like going outside much. The manager accepted and I was sent my first game, which was the digital circus one."

"Huh. I didn't know that was an offer. I would've rather did that than worry about if I looked 'professional' enough. That would've been much easier for my sanity and psyche."

A soft smile made its way onto my face. Pomni was a lot easier to talk to than I thought she would be, certainly with how nervous and sporadic she looks on the outside. It looks like I judged her too soon. She's actually a really fun person to be around. Without thinking, I glanced in Jax's direction, just to lock eye contact with him. When he noticed I was looking, his eyes widened for a moment before a grin came onto his face, before looking away. My heart felt heavy as I saw him turn away. How can he act so...normal? I want to punch him.

Pomni must've noticed I was looking at Jax because she cleared her throat, which snapped me out of my rage induced thoughts as I looked at her. A gentle yet crooked grin was on her face as she started speaking. "Let's try not thinking about him right now, alright? I can try talking to him for you, if you want me to. N-Not right now, but...after this adventure is over. If y-you want me to."

My eyes widened. "You're willing to do that for me?"

Her smile tightened as she nodded. "Y-Yeah. I can try. It's what friends are for, right?"

Friends. Yeah, that's technically what we are now, aren't we? Yet...even if we are 'friends,' why is she so willing to talk to Jax for me? Usually people would ask me for certain favors, not the other way around.

"...Yeah. It's what friends are for," I repeated, my heart clenching with unwarranted nerves. "The same goes for you. If you ever need anything, no matter how big or small, I'm there for you, okay?"

Suddenly she looked a bit nervous as she nodded. "R-Right. Yeah, okay."

Awkward silence came between the two of us. That was, until I felt a soft tap on my shoulder, making me jump slightly as I turned around to see who it was, hoping that it wasn't going to be who I thought it was. And surprisingly it wasn't. It was...Ragatha?

"Hey, guys," She greeted us with a smile. "Would you two like to play volleyball with me and the others? I found a volleyball net and I was wondering if you two would be interested in playing. I-It's okay if not! I'm not, like, forcing you or anything. But, um..." She glanced off to the side, looking a bit awkward.

I glanced over at Pomni who seemed a bit unsure, but knowing her, she would probably agree, anyway. So I looked right back over to Ragatha before plastering on a feigned grin.

"Sure, we can join. But, um...is Jax joining?" I questioned the ragdoll, uneasiness was seeping out of my tone.

Ragatha looked unsure but shrugged. "I mean, I guess so. I would feel kinda bad if we included everybody but excluded him, ya know? If he doesn't want to, that's one thing. I-If he does, though, then...you know..." She paused for a moment before looking up at me. "Did anything happen between the two of you? You guys were always so close, but...you sounded almost nervous."

I shook my head, trying my best to not worry her. "N-No...everything's fine. Don't worry about it. We'll meet you at the volleyball net, right, Pomni?"

I glanced back at the jester who nodded, standing up from her seat as I did the same.

Ragatha gave us a thumbs up. "Perfect! I still have to ask Jax and Kinger if they wanna play. I'll see you guys soon!"

We both waved in her general direction before heading off to the volleyball net, where I knew I would probably have to be around Jax and it kills me.

Yet, there is also a small part of me that feels excited about this. It's a small part, but it still exists.

Sorry if the ending was a bit abrupt, I didn't really know how to end this chapter. I hope you guys like it, though, since I'm actually pretty proud of this one, in a strange way. Sure, there are some things I could improve (like with every chapter) but I actually like how it turned out and how I wrote it. Anyway, I have nothing else I really wanna add, so I hope you guys will have a good day/night! <33
