The days leading up to the Christmas party blurred into a rush of final approvals and endless details. Between approval of procurement, approving decorations, and reviewing catering contracts, Eden hardly noticed how often she found herself passing the legal team's offices. Inevitably, conversations with Sam, one of the company attorneys, grew longer.

At first it was harmless—quick exchanges about compliance deadlines, a casual comment about Tokyo's winter weather. But over the weeks, their interactions developed an easy rhythm. Sam was tall, broad-shouldered, with the kind of sharp blue eyes and confident smile that drew attention wherever he went. His charm was effortless, his humor quick, and he had a way of making Eden laugh without ever overstepping. Still, Mia had noticed more than once.

That afternoon, Eden was reviewing final RSVPs when Sam approached, hands tucked casually into the pockets of his tailored navy suit. "So," he began smoothly, his tone warm, "I hear the Christmas gala is going to be the event of the season. You've outdone yourself."

She offered a polite smile. "It's the team's effort, really. My role is just making sure all the moving parts fit together."

Sam tilted his head, studying her with a playful curiosity. "And do you plan to spend the evening moving those parts into place, or actually enjoying yourself for once?"

Eden laughed softly. "I'll try to do both."

"Then let me make that easier." His expression shifted—still charming, but more deliberate. "Please don't fire or report me for this but come as my plus-one. It would be an honor to accompany the woman who made the night possible."

For a moment, Eden blinked, caught off guard. She had expected the compliments, but not the invitation. "Your plus-one?" she repeated, her voice carefully measured.

"Why not?" Sam asked easily, his smile disarming. "We've gotten to know each other these past few weeks, haven't we? It would be... enjoyable."

Before she could answer, Mia's voice carried from down the hall, calling her name. Eden excused herself with a graceful nod. "I don't think that's a good idea" she said, keeping her tone professional.

As Sam disappeared back toward the legal offices, Eden exhaled, the weight of the question lingering. She knew word of such an arrangement would travel quickly. And she also knew one person in particular—Kenji—would hear it. Sam is a catch, handsome, successful, even charming but I just don't think I can walk into a company party on his arms.
