The police would be keeping watch on the house until further notice.
.............
It seemed that the chances were quite high on that. Some mob gangsters started trying to sneak in to the house by night. Randall was up in the tree. He heard movement in the grass and footsteps. Tasting the air with his tongue, he smelled them and the drugs on them. They weren't going to sneak in on his watch.
Randall snuck down the tree invisibly. He was quiet and jumped on one, knocking him down on his face. The man cried out. Then Randall got off him.
The men were shocked. There were more of them this time but Randall made short work of them all. The cops heard the cries coming from the back yard.
The family was shocked too. The cops hadn't taken them down but someone sure had. Randall had fought them till they were all unconscious for the police. Only Barry knew who had done this. There were eight men that got arrested that night. It was their whole gang this time.
Randall had taken no chances. He hadn't revealed himself to any of them this time. He just did the task of keeping the house safe. After he was done, he had gone back up the tree.
Carol and Ron were so happy they were safe. But it was a mystery to them about who their mysterious savior was. Only Barry knew who their protector was.
For the police, they found bruises on the men's heads, faces, and stomachs. There were whiplash marks on their legs from being tripped. All that mattered though was that the criminal gang was now all going to be in prison for a long time for murder charges and doing drugs.
.............
As for Kim, it was true she did have a furry monster that visited her every weeknight. This was Randall's ticket home.
Randall had watched the house all night and he saw the monster in the window from the lamp that came on. But there was no screaming from Kim. There was laughter instead. Laughter? That was strange.
He crawled down from the tree again and climbed the side of the house and peeked in the window. It was an orange two-legged furry monster with two hands and wings. It had three eyes and it was doing some juggling and falling on some jacks. Kim was laughing hard.
Randall cocked his head. Why wasn't the monster scaring her? That was odd. But either way, it was his ticket home. Randall just watched for tonight, but he would get in tomorrow.
............
The next morning, Barry was able to sneak some food outside for Randall.
"Randall? You out here?" Barry called out.
Randall looked down from the tree. "Yes, kid, I'm here. In the tree."
"I brought you some food. I couldn't let you in last night because my aunt and uncle were watching me like hawks." The boy explained.
"I understand." Randall replied. He came down from the tree. He took the food from him. "Thanks."
"You're welcome. It was you who stopped the gang from getting us last night, wasn't it?"
"You got it." Randall grinned mischievously. "They didn't even know what hit them. I made sure to take them all down and not leave one conscious. I didn't kill them, but they sure weren't going to harm you again."
"Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. But later in the night, I saw a monster visit your little cousin from the tree. That's my ticket home, Barry. Remember, we agreed." Randall reminded him.
"Yes, I remember. It's a shame you can't stay though. You've saved me twice now, and the lives of my remaining family."
"I'll leave you my bag, Barry, but I can't stay here. I have to get home. I can't have anything from this world with me. I don't know how things will go for me, but I'll try to come and visit when I can, if I can. But you can always remember me through my bag if not." Randall explained.
"I'll miss you." Barry said. He gave Randall a hug.
Randall flinched a bit, but he put his arms around the boy. "Yeah, I'll miss you too. Now that's enough. Don't make me all sappy."
"So, tonight then?"
"Yes, if you would please. Does the family leave for work?" Randall asked.
"Yes. They both work and my cousin is put in daycare. They'll be gone most of the day. There's a spare key under the mat by the back door to get in. Lock it once you're in and put the key back." Barry instructed.
"Of course." Randall ate the food that Barry brought out for him, then went back up the tree for now. He would wait until everyone was gone. "I should be in the house by the time you get home."
"Okay." Barry had to go back inside and eat his own breakfast. He was going to be put in a new school today. It probably wouldn't be pleasant, but he had to go to school by law.
The humans soon left to go do human jobs and duties. That was when Randall snuck down the tree with his bag. He used the key under the mat like Barry said to and let himself into the house. He locked the door back up again.
He explored the house while they were gone. He went looking for Barry's room too. He found the little girl, Kim's room. That was where he needed to be later tonight. He was going home hopefully tonight and he could get his business solved with Barry. He may or may not be back, but he would be totally grateful for helping him get back just as the boy was grateful for him saving his life and family.
Randall really didn't want to get as attached to Barry as he had Joanne. He was a little attached but not as before. But he knew the boy was attached to him even though they had only known each other just a few days.
He went into Barry's room for now and rested on the soft bed. "Hmmm. This feels nice. I miss sleeping in beds." Randall smiled, cuddling the pillow. He had the door shut too, but he knew better. He got on the other side of the bed instead. He fell asleep.
