Morning sunlight spilled into the hospital ward. Emma hadn’t slept a second, but at least her sister was safe.
Historia lay on the bed with a bandage around her forehead and a small plaster on her arm, pale but smiling faintly.
“Unnie, stop crying already,” Historia teased weakly, reaching for Emma’s hand. “I’m fine. The car didn’t even win against me.”
Emma let out a watery laugh and kissed her sister’s hand. “You scared me half to death, you idiot.”
Daniel stood quietly at the door, watching the two sisters. For the first time in hours, he saw relief softening Emma’s face.
He walked in with two cups of coffee, setting one by Emma’s side.
“Doctor said she’ll need rest, but nothing too serious,” he said softly, trying to sound normal.
Emma gave him a small smile, her eyes tired but grateful. “Thank you, Daniel. For staying. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.”
His heart clenched. He wanted to say you’ll always have me, but the memory of last night—the dare, Margret’s kiss—stabbed him like a knife.
His smile faltered, but he quickly covered it up.
Historia’s mischievous eyes flicked between them. “So… is he your boyfriend now, Emma?” she asked with a grin.
Emma blushed instantly. “Historia!”
Daniel chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Guess I should take that as a compliment.”
The room filled with a rare, fragile laughter. For a moment, everything felt normal. Almost happy.
But deep down, Daniel knew this peace was temporary.
Because Margret wasn’t the type to give up after being humiliated in front of everyone.
And the secret of that kiss—the one Emma didn’t know about yet—was like a ticking bomb.
And when it exploded, it wouldn’t just be Daniel’s guilt. It would be Emma’s heartbreak.
Holding It Together~~
The doctor had just finished checking on Historia when Emma’s phone buzzed with a call. It was her father. She quickly put him on speaker.
“Emma, sweetheart, how’s your sister? We’re on the first flight back, but we’ll take a few hours.” His voice was heavy with worry.
“She’s okay, Dad,” Emma said softly, glancing at her sister who waved from the bed. “Don’t panic. Just… come safe. We’ll manage until you’re here.”
Her mother’s voice chimed in from the background, emotional as ever. “Take care of each other. We’ll be there soon.”
The call ended, and suddenly, the silence of responsibility settled in the room.
Emma sighed, leaning against the wall. “So… it’s just us until they get here.”
Historia grinned cheekily, despite her condition. “Us? You mean Emma and her knight in shining armor.”
“Historia!” Emma blushed, glaring at her sister. Daniel only chuckled, scratching the back of his neck, but inside, his chest tightened.
He wanted to be that knight—always. But guilt was a shadow he couldn’t shake.
Still, he knew one thing: with Emma’s parents gone, she needed someone strong by her side.
So he straightened his shoulders, placed a hand on her back, and said, “Don’t worry, Emma. I’m not leaving. Not tonight. Not until they arrive.”
Emma looked at him, really looked. His voice was steady, his touch grounding.
She gave the smallest nod and whispered, “Thank you.”
And that was enough to make his heart ache more than ever.
Because he was protecting her with everything he had—
........all while hiding the one truth that could shatter her.
