I nodded. "When did you get here?"
"Yesterday afternoon. I went out to run some errands for my mom and dad. Wanted to see if the town still looked the same."
"Does it?"
"Yeah. Exactly the same."
"Home is home." I said softly.
"That it is." She said. "You really look great Cole. I'm happy to see you looking so happy."
I nodded. "Yeah. We should catch up. I still have the old truck."
Carmen laughed. "Oh my gosh. That thing was old when we would go out in it! How is that still running?"
"I don't know. What are you doing tonight?"
"Nothing. Pick me up?"
"Yeah."
"They still have the diner open?" She asked as she paid me.
"Yeah. Milkshake for old times sake? Strawberry of course."
She hummed. "That would make my day. When are you off?"
"Four. I'll pick you up at five."
"Great. See you then."
I pulled up to Carm's. I knew the way from my house to hers like the back of my hand. She walked out of her house. Her hair was down. She had a nice little jacket on in this colder weather. She hadn't aged a day.
I got out of the car, opening the door for her.
"Thank you," she said. I smiled, closing it. I went back over to my side, getting in. We spent far too much time in this car. The bench seats. The open back...
Safe to say we weren't innocent in high school.
"This thing hasn't changed."
"A lot of things in my life haven't changed." I said.
"Yeah? How are you though?"
"Good. Yeah. I mean I'm happy. Tell me about you though. How was life these last few years?"
"Good. Yeah. I went to college in London. And then from there I just travelled for work. Lots of art stuff. And now I'm here. Connecticut is quiet. I have a little apartment there. And as much as I liked seeing the world, I'm happy to be close to the ones I love again."
"Yeah? Good. Meet anyone? I mean do you have anyone..?" I asked.
Carmen just laughed. "No. One thing that I didn't like was that I couldn't even keep a friend over there. I don't know."
"A girl like you couldn't keep a friend? Gosh this place sounds miserable."
"Shut up." She said, laughing.
I smiled. She was the same girl I fell in love with. So kind. Warm.
"Cole. I'm so sorry for ending things." She said. I shook my head.
