Jake frowned, crossing his arms. "I've never seen you around before, though. Are you not Korean?"
Arielle forced a laugh. "I'm from New York. If I had it my way, I'd still be there right now, but like I said. Shit happened."
His eyes widened. "Wait a minute. Heeseung said one of his sister's friends was coming to Korea from the States. You must be the girl he was talking about, right?"
It took Arielle a second to realize that he'd switched to English — partly because he spoke with a thick accent (Australian, maybe? She couldn't tell.) that made it nearly impossible to tell what he was saying.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Uh, I said Heeseung talked about you...?" His voice lifted at the end, like he was the one asking the question instead of her.
"I still don't—you know what, never mind." Arielle shook her head, finally lifting to meet Jake's eyes for the first time. She studied him, how his head cocked to one side, his left hand fidgeting with the edge of his sleeve — and immediately looked away.
"Look, it's been a long day, and I have a bunch of things to unpack," she tried to say as politely as possible. "So could you, um, leave me to it? We can get to know each other tomorrow. Since, y'know, you seem so eager."
Jake blinked. "Oh. Sure."
He stepped out of the room, but not before turning back and flashing a stupidly charming smile that made her want to throw things. "I'll be here if you need anything, new roomie."
Arielle replied through gritted teeth: "Yeah. I'll let you know."
She waited until he went into his own room before closing the door with a dramatic sigh. Oh, who the fuck am I kidding? I'm gonna die.
"Siri, play 'I Hate It Here' by Taylor Swift."

✷ MIKAN'S NOTES. hey guys sorry for disappearing for almost two months 😅 school has started up again and i've just been so busy with my extracurriculars + writer's block :( but chapter two is out yay!! i apologize for it being a complete yap fest (1.9k words) with a gazillion scene changes (three), i tried to touch on all the plot details that i wanted for this chapter but it ended up being a lot longer than expected and i didn't feel like splitting it up into two chapters... i also hope i did a somewhat decent job with writing jake's intro! i loved the way he looked in enhypen's 'no doubt' promotion show with spotify korea, so i described his exact appearance here 🤭 please let me know your thoughts on this chapter! (was it too long, did the plot make sense, etc).
on another note, watch this be the most spacious college dorm you've ever seen 😍 i'm sorry but if i had to physically sleep in the same room as jake i would go crazy too (but not for the same reason as arielle...) ty to my friend ellie for sharing her dorm experience with me to help me with this <3 chapter 3 will hopefully be shorter and out as soon as possible (someone hold me at gunpoint to keep this promise), and all past chapters will be edited in time as well bc i'm rereading them and already hating my writing >.<
