Kendra turned and squared up mugging Ghen. “Girl, You’re embarrassing yourself, get a fucking grip.” Ghenesis said calmly, belly peeking through her hoodie now. She had that tired mama tone, like she was two seconds from snatching souls.
Kendra smirked. “Oh, I’ll get a grip alright. Wonder how Mr. Santiago gon’ feel when he finds out his precious kids are fuckin’ each other?” She said it loud like she was on some reality TV reunion.
Gigi stepped up but Dice grabbed him by the waist like, “Nah, baby. Let her breathe. She tryna piss you off..... Kendra please go about your day." He sighs.
Kendra turned with a smug look and spat, “If I don’t, what you gon’ do, faggot?”
And that’s when Ghenesis snapped. Like, full on switch-flip. One minute she was calm, next thing I know she had Kendra by the throat, slammed her against the locker like WWE just hired her, then dragged her ass to the floor with a slam that echoed.
“DAMN!” Nico yelled. “She Mortal Kombat her ass! FINISH HER!”
I grabbed Ghen, pullin’ her back before she ripped Kendra’s spirit out her scalp. Kendra was laid out like expired milk, wheezing and trying to remember what year it was. Mason stepped over her and said, “Damn, you should’ve shut up five minutes ago.”
Whole hallway was wild. People recording, scream-laughing, scatterin’. Then we heard admin comin’ down the hall, so we all dipped out like roaches when the lights flick on — smooth and clean. Too many bodies, no clear footage. Ain’t no snitch in our section.
Outside, I pulled Ghenesis close, rubbin’ her belly. “You good, peaches?”
She nodded, breathin’ heavy. “I’m hungry.”
I chuckled, kissed her forehead. “Say less. Let’s get my babies fed.” Gigi and the girls all went “Awwww,” like it was a Hallmark commercial.
I smirked. “So I take it they know?”
Ghen laughed. “And they happy for us.”
I nodded, feelin’ that warmth in my chest. If they supported and accepted her, they protected for life. No questions asked. This wasn’t just crew anymore.
This was our family. And I’d burn the whole world down before I let anybody fuck with it.
Ghenesis was tucked under my arm, her lil baby bump pokin’ through her hoodie, stomach movin’ with every deep breath she took. Gigi, Dice, Erin, and Taylor was right behind us, still talkin’ big about how she Mortal Kombat’d Kendra’s ass into the afterlife. Nico and Mason trailed a few steps behind just in case Kendra or her lil minions tried somethin’ stupid. Spoiler alert: they ain’t want that smoke.
“Dawg, she snatched that bitch like she owed her money and a prayer,” Nico laughed, slap-boxin’ the air as we made our way to the cars. “I ain’t never seen a pregnant woman move that fast unless it was for pickles and ice cream.”
“I ain’t even know Ghenesis had hands like that,” Dice said, lookin’ proud like he just got his hair rebraided by a woman who loved him. “That was spiritual.”
I helped Ghen into the truck, made sure she was comfortable, rubbed her belly before I closed the door gentle. Her energy was soft but heavy, like she’d been carryin’ more than just the baby. She ain’t say much, but I knew her — the silence meant her mind was full. I turned to the crew. “Follow us. Food on me. Mama need to eat.”
We pulled up to a lil soul food spot tucked in the corner of the Eastside — place where the mac n cheese got attitude and the lemonade taste like it got secrets. Ghen sat in the booth, leanin’ back while I ordered her turkey wings, greens, and extra rice and gravy. The second that fork touched her lips, she damn near moaned.
“That’s it right there?” I asked, smirkin’.
“Mmmhmm,” she said, noddin’. “You did good, Papa thank you."
The crew was in the corner booth talkin’ shit over hot plates and Kool-Aid, but me and her? We was in our own lil world. She had kicked her slides off and propped one foot on my thigh while she ate, and I started massagin’ it under the table.
“You good?” I asked her, real low.
She nodded. “Feet hurt, but I’m okay now. Just tired of all the bullshit. It’s always something.”
“I know,” I told her. “But that shit back there? You handled it. I promised you I wasn’t gon’ lay hands on that girl, and you kept me from breakin’ it. That mean somethin’ to me.”
She looked up at me, eyes soft but sharp. “You always say that. That I mean somethin’. But I be wonderin’… how much do I really mean? After everything with Kendra, Anisha and all this mess—”
I cut her off right there. Reached into my hoodie pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, slid it across the table like a stack of blue hundreds. Her fork froze mid-air.
“I bought this two weeks after you moved in,” I said, voice steady. “Didn’t even know why at the time… just knew my spirit told me to. Now I know. You been my wife, Ghen. But I want us to make it real. On paper. In God’s eyes. All of it.”
Her hand started shakin’ before she even opened the box. When she did, that tear rolled down like it had been waitin’. Diamond hit the light and glared like it had a story to tell.
“Will you marry me?” I asked her, straight from the soul.
She nodded so fast it was like her head was tryin’ to fly off. “Yes,” she whispered through tears. “Yes, Zeus. I’ll marry you.”
I reached across and kissed her knuckles, slipping the ring on her finger, then leaned in and kissed her lips — slow, deep, with all the weight of everything we done survived. The world might’ve been chaotic, but this moment? It was ours.
The whole crew peeped the energy and started clappin’ lowkey. Gigi damn near teared up. “Y’all gon’ make me give dice a baby. Shit,” he said, fannin’ his face with a chicken wing. While dice looked at him with love in his eyes.
Taylor yelled, “We throwin’ the bachelorette party, PERIOD!”
Nico nodded. “If y’all need a live DJ, I got you. I ain’t cheap though.”
I turned back to Ghen, eyes locked on her. “I know this ain’t how we pictured it. But I wouldn’t change shit. Even the messy parts — they led me to you. You carryin’ my child. You protectin’ me when I ain't even know I needed protectin’. I swear on my mama’s name, I’m gon’ make sure y’all safe. Forever.”
She just kept cryin’ and laughin’ at the same time. “I don’t deserve you.”
“Nah,” I said, leanin’ in, lips to her ear. “I don’t deserve you.”
