The day had definitely been eventful.
They were unwinding now, still processing the news.
The room was dark, save for the soft blue glow of a charger block tucked behind the nightstand. Travis had his arm curled beneath her neck, one hand tracing lazy lines across her arm, while his other palm, warm and reassuring, rested low over her stomach — a place it now gravitated to like muscle memory. He didn't even seem aware of it. And yet it grounded her. Taylor lay half on her side, facing him, head nestled in the space between his jaw and shoulder. The room smelled like fresh laundry and the faintest hint of coconut lotion — the bedtime mix she used lately.
A new sound had joined the quiet: the silent, beating thought of two. Two heartbeats. Two babies growing quietly between them.
Travis exhaled, breaking the silence, still in disbelief; the thought alone putting a grin on his lips. He hadn't stopped smiling since the ultrasound; it seemed impossible to. "Babe... We got a great deal..."
Taylor opened her eyes, murmuring sheepishly. "Mhm?"
"We got two for the price of one." He grinned into her hair, chuckling to himself.
She didn't laugh. Didn't even smile. Instead, she feigned tiredness and buried her face against his chest.
Travis paused.
Taylor shifted just slightly against him. Still quiet.
That was the first moment he felt it — not panic, not worry — but a tug. Like her heart was sitting farther away than her body was. Like something in her had gone still.
He tipped his chin, tried to look at her face. "You okay, baby?"
Her voice was soft, gentle but somewhat compromised. "Yeah..."
He waited. Let it breathe.
"Taylor..." He said gently, looking her in the eyes. "You sure?"
She didn't answer for a long time. He felt her swallow first. But then, she knew he had already seen right through her. Her eyes had welled up with unshed tears and there was no denying it. "I don't know..."
There it was. Cracked, honest, sitting between them like a third person in the bed. She turned her face slightly into his chest, and he felt her breath hitch.
Travis wrapped his arm around her tighter. "Talk to me, baby. What's going on in that gorgeous head of yours?"
That did it. Her lips quivered, and when she blinked, tears caught on her lashes. She let out a breath that broke midway through and then shook her head, voice barely audible. "I don't know what's wrong with me..."
Her voice cracked, and she quickly wiped at her eyes. Travis didn't flinch. He didn't try to fix it or rush her. He just held her tighter, his fingers stroking slow, safe circles on her back.
