The silence after the door opened wasn’t empty.
It was listening.
Mira couldn’t move. Her fingers clenched at her side, not out of fear—
but recognition.
That man…
She had seen his face before.
But not in dreams. Not in nightmares.
In something deeper.
The man stepped forward, each footfall echoing like it was hitting her skull.
His voice was low. Controlled.
> “Naera,” he said again. “You are summoned.”
Eyla stood protectively in front of Mira.
> “Who are you?” she demanded.
But he didn’t look at her. His eyes—those hollow, shimmering eyes—were locked on Mira only.
Like the rest of the world was irrelevant.
> “She remembers,” he said, almost softly.
“I can see it in her core. It’s awakening.”
Mira’s voice cracked.
> “Who are you to me?”
He tilted his head slightly.
> “That depends. On whether you remember the life we had… or the life I erased.”
A sharp flash tore through her skull—
A vision.
Rain.
A rooftop.
Her hand in his.
A promise whispered:
> “If you ever forget me, I’ll find you again.”
And then—
Darkness.
A blade.
Blood on her hands.
His voice, shouting in pain—
Mira gasped, falling to her knees.
> “Stop it! Get out of my head!”
But he didn’t move. He didn’t need to.
The Vault itself seemed to twist and tremble around him.
> “I didn’t come to hurt you,” he said.
“I came because something is coming. Something worse than The Forgetting.”
Eyla shouted:
> “Why should we believe you?!”
He finally looked at her, and his expression—emptiness. Not evil. Not good.
Just… broken.
> “Because I don’t remember either,” he said.
“And if I’ve forgotten… the world is in danger.”
Mira stared at him, her voice trembling.
> “Then tell me your name.”
He opened his mouth. Closed it.
> “I don’t know it anymore.”
And for the first time since she woke up, Mira didn’t feel alone.
She felt cursed.
But no longer alone.
The Vault pulsed again. Not with danger.
But with recognition.
Something had begun.
