"Meet me at our spot"
—
Rory sat in the grass, her legs stretched far before her and her back against a tree. She looked up at the stars, something she and her brother loved to do since they were kids. She was doing anything she could to imagine she was back home. Going to new schools was always, especially so far away from home. But she was determined to have the best college experience ever.
She hadn't been sitting long before someone "found" her. Although she was too lost in thought and hadn't noticed him.
"Is this seat taken?' a man next to her asked suddenly.
"Holy shit!" she jumped, "How long have you been there?"
"Not long." he chuckled, "And uh- I didn't mean to scare you." He sat down next to her assuming that she was never gonna answer his question.
"No, no it's fine. Honestly." She calmed herself down and looked over at the man next to her.
He had glasses on, but not reading glasses, they were like sunglasses. But she thought it was better not to ask about them.
He had short brown hair that fell a little above his eyes. And he had nice lips, very nice lips. Though that's probably not something she should be looking at, nor thinking about.
She studied his face a few moments longer before finally introducing herself.
"I'm uh-, Mallory. Martinez. Mallory Martinez. But, um you can call me Rory." Her cheeks turned a light pink and she hoped that he couldn't see that due to the dark.
"Mallory," he muttered before looking back up at her, "That's very pretty,"
Rory was smiling like an idiot now, "Thank you," she said.
"I'm Matt Murdock," he said, extending his hand out for her to shake.
His hands were big, bigger than hers anyway. She put her hand in his and shook it.
"What's your middle name?" Matt asked.
"What" Rory asked. It was an odd question.
"Mine is Michael," he said, "My initials are M.M.M,"
Mallory laughed, "Mine's Monroe,"
He grinned, "Mallory Monroe Martinez,"
She smiled back, "Matthew Michael Murdock,"
They both laughed and then turned to look back at the sky.
They sat in silence for a little while, although it wasn't an awkward silence, it was kind of comforting. Which is surprising seeing that, other than this small interaction, they were complete strangers.
Soon enough Rory broke the silence with a question, "The stars are beautiful tonight aren't they?"
Matt laughed to himself before answering her question, "I couldn't tell you. I can't see 'em."
"Oh," she said, not realizing what he meant, "Oh! - You're," Rory felt completely stupid now, and if her cheeks weren't hot before they definitely were now.
"Blind? Oh yeah." he laughed, "I'm surprised you didn't pick up on it earlier." he pointed to a walking stick behind him, "Oh, and uh these." he took off his glasses and waved them in front of his smiling face.
He had really pretty eyes. They were a beautiful shade of brown. Mary wondered why he didn't show them off more often. Probably a blind thing.
She laughed alongside him, "So that's what those are for,"
"Well, what did you think they were for?"
"I don't know, I thought you were some type of freak or something."
"Ouch!" Matt said in mock offense as he put his glasses down next to him.
They were both laughing now and anyone who saw them would think they were crazy. And after what felt like forever the pair had finally calmed themselves down.
Matt turned his head toward Mallory and listened as her heartbeat went down and he smiled to himself.
"So what do you plan to do when you get out of here?" he asks her. "You know, like as an occupation,"
"Well I'm studying to be a lawyer," she replied which earned a grin from Matt.
"Really?"
"Yeah. Why do you sound so surprised?"
"No reason,"
"You don't think I can do it or something?"
"No! No, no, I think you'd make a great lawyer!" he laughed. His eyes scrunched up when he did. It was adorable.
"What about you Mr. Murdock?" Mary mocked, "It's gotta be better than a lawyer,"
"Well not exactly," Matt started, "I was gonna be a lawyer too,"
"Really!?" Rory said in a heavily exaggerated tone and wide eyes.
"Oh don't be like that," Matt laughed as he shoved her shoulder.
"Like what? We could be partners!"
"Partners?" Matt chuckled.
"Yup. Or..." she trailed off as she pushed herself off the grass, "We could be rivals,"
"What?" Matt asked, shocked.
"Goodnight Matt,"
"Wait! Where are you going?" he asked but Rory was already gone.
God, he had to find this woman.
