Many still feel chills in their spine when they hear a recording of that speech or remember that day.

Those were the words of prime minister Neville Chamberlain. The utter terror that declaration created was palpable. Everyone knew what the Nazis were capable of and there were legitimate fears that they would roll right over Britain.

These concerns were reinforced by the German Blitz across Europe. And it became quite clear early on that this Second World War would be nothing like the First.

The situation in Europe had been rather grim for a good time and Germany's recent occupation of Czechoslovakia only made matters worse. The director of the Railway Board even had to do an inspection of British railways to see if they were compatible in case the railways had to help in the war. The Railway Board and the Ministry of Defense wanted to make sure the nation was not caught off guard.
