The city lights blinked outside her window, casting golden lines across the floor of her quiet flat. Sera sat curled up on the edge of the sofa, her phone resting in her palm, thumb hovering. One message had just come through:
“Have you eaten, little one? I’m home if you need quiet.”
She read it twice once with her mind, once with her heart. Aaron didn’t need paragraphs. His words always landed precisely where they were meant to. Calm. Measured. Intentional.
Sera’s chest eased slightly as she typed back.
“Rough day. Might come over if that’s alright.”
The reply came instantly.
“Door’s unlocked. Your blanket’s waiting.”
There were no fireworks in her stomach, no giddy butterflies just… peace. A soft sense of belonging. She slipped on her coat, keys in hand, and stepped out into the cool London night.
Twenty minutes later, she was standing in his doorway. Aaron opened it with that same expression he always wore unreadable to the world, but clear to her. His eyes scanned her face, and without a word, he stepped aside.
“Take your shoes off, love,” he murmured. “You’re home now.”
Inside, everything was still. No loud music, no chaos. Just warmth, books, and him the one man who never asked her to be anyone but herself.
She sat down on the corner of his couch, her hands fidgeting in her lap.
He walked over slowly, knelt before her, and took both hands in his. His voice, as always, was low and steady.
“You don’t have to explain anything. Just breathe.” And she did.
