It started with a note.
Folded twice, slipped quietly into her hand after class.
> “Friday. After your last class. Just say yes.”
She smiled before she even finished reading it.
She said yes.

By 5:47 PM on Friday, they were in his car—windows down, music low, the Manila skyline slowly turning gold under the weight of sunset. He didn’t say where they were going, and she didn’t ask. For once, she didn’t need control. She just let herself fall into the softness of it—his hand brushing hers on the gearshift, the way he glanced at her when he thought she wasn’t looking.
They ended up at a small restaurant tucked near the edge of Intramuros. Candlelit, quiet, with old brick walls and shelves filled with secondhand books and old records.
“This place…” she whispered, looking around.
“I thought you’d like it,” he said.
She did.
They talked over adobo and pasta, over mango juice and her favorite calamansi pie. About professors. Finals. Risa. Politics. The future.
And then—
About them.
He looked at her across the table, eyes serious now. “I know we’re still figuring this out. But I want you to know I’m not playing around.”
“I know,” she said softly.
“I don’t want this to be temporary.”
“It doesn’t feel temporary,” she replied.
A silence stretched between them, not uncomfortable—just full.
She reached for his hand.
And in that small moment—between the dim lights and background jazz, between a half-empty plate and a heart too full—something anchored.
They weren’t just dating.
They were choosing.
Each other.
Outside the law books and debate podiums.
Beyond the hush of library corners.
They were here. Present. In it.
Later that night, he drove her back to the dorms.
And before she got out, he stopped her with a soft, “Wait.”
She turned.
He leaned in, kissed her temple, then whispered, “I like the way you look when you’re happy.”
She didn’t say anything.
Just smiled.
Because for once, she didn’t have to explain what she felt.
He already knew.
