STRINGS IN SILENCE

Start from the beginning

Every part of him screamed to run.
To leave this place, this boy, this moment.

But he didn’t move.

Not backward.

Not anymore.

He held Minho’s stare—eyes steady, shoulders stiff—even as fear twisted like wire through his ribs.

You think you’re brave,” Minho said, taking a step closer. “But I see it.”

His gaze flicked to Seungmin’s clenched fists.
The way his jaw trembled just slightly.
The tension in his throat.

You’re scared,” he whispered. “Terrified. And still pretending you’re not.”

I am scared,” Seungmin said, voice quieter than before—but no less firm.
But that doesn’t mean I’ll kneel.”

Minho’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re shaking.”

So?” Seungmin answered. “I’m still standing.”

For a moment, silence pulsed between them. Heavy. Sharp.

Minho looked at him like a puzzle he couldn’t solve. A threat he couldn’t quite crush.

Then suddenly—he laughed.

Low. Bitter. Dangerous.

You don’t even realize it, do you?” he muttered, turning away. “You're already in the palm of my hand. Even your defiance—it’s happening on my stage.”

Seungmin’s lips parted to speak, but Minho held up a hand.

Go,” he said, not facing him. “You’ll be back. They always come back when the world stops being kind.”

Seungmin didn’t wait for another word.

He turned. Walked to the door.

Every step felt like dragging his soul behind him.

But he didn’t look back.

The sky outside had turned gray by the time Seungmin stepped inside his home.

He didn't even take off his shoes. The moment he heard the sound—low, muffled, broken—his feet moved on instinct.

His father was seated on the floor of the living room, shoulders hunched, face buried in his hands.

His mother stood beside him, eyes red, trying to stay strong as she clutched his shoulder.

Appa?” Seungmin asked, voice barely above a whisper.

His father looked up, eyes swollen.

They’re pulling out,” he said shakily. “Our suppliers. Investors. The new location—they’re pulling out. They think we’re too risky to associate with now.”

Seungmin stood frozen, breath caught somewhere in his throat.

We’ve worked so hard for this… Twenty years,” his father continued, voice cracking. “And now it’s slipping through our hands because of some whispers.”

Seungmin clenched his jaw, guilt crashing over him like a wave.

That was when the doorbell rang.

His mother blinked, confused. “This late?”

She opened the door—and the air shifted.

A tall man in a sharp black suit stepped in without asking. His shoes barely made a sound against the floor.

He wore silver rings, a luxury watch, and a calm, knowing smile.

Seungmin-ssi,” the man greeted, bowing slightly. “I come on behalf of Mr. Minho.”

Seungmin’s entire body tensed.

What do you want?” he asked, stepping in front of his parents.

I’m here to offer... a solution,” the man said smoothly, holding out a sleek black envelope. “Mr. Minho is willing to restore your family's reputation. Clean the slate. Even cover the restaurant’s debts.”

Seungmin’s father looked up in disbelief. “Why would someone do that for us?”

The man gave a soft smile. “Because your son is valuable.”

Seungmin’s stomach dropped.

What’s the catch?” he asked, his voice flat.

The man opened the envelope just slightly and revealed a simple, one-page contract. No details. Just a place for Seungmin’s signature.

You agree to a... temporary arrangement. Accompany Mr. Minho publicly. Appear at certain events. Play the part he needs. Keep your head down.”

Seungmin’s hands curled into fists.

“So you want me to be his... puppet?”

Partner,” the man corrected, still smiling. “For a little while. Nothing more. In return, your parents never have to worry again.”

Seungmin felt the walls closing in. His father was watching him now, not understanding—but hoping. Desperate.

And behind it all, Minho’s voice echoed in his mind:

"You’ll come back. They always come back when the world stops being kind."

Seungmin looked at the paper again.

And for the first time...

He didn’t know what to do.
