Aiko had always been different. While others in her small town found comfort in routine, she found it suffocating. The same streets, the same faces, the same expectations—it all felt like an invisible cage. Adventure whispered to her like an old friend, and no matter how much she tried to silence it, the voice only grew louder.
One evening, as the sun bled into the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues, Aiko finally made her decision. "I have to go," she told her parents. Her mother's worried sigh was expected. Her father's stern gaze was inevitable. But neither could hold her back. They saw the fire in her eyes and knew resisting was pointless.
"Be careful," her father finally said, relenting.
That was all she needed.
She packed her bag—a notebook for documenting her journey, a camera to capture memories, and essentials for the road. As the car's engine roared to life, excitement buzzed through her veins. She had no set destination, only a craving for the unknown.
The Road to Nowhere
The countryside stretched endlessly before her, the road a ribbon of possibility. The air was cool, the world quiet. She felt free. But then—
A sputter. A cough. The engine groaned before falling silent.
Panic flickered in her chest as she stared at the fuel gauge. Empty.
The road around her was desolate, flanked by dark fields. But in the distance, a petrol station sign glowed weakly. A mere 250 meters away. Relief washed over her as she grabbed her phone and stepped into the night.
The station was nearly deserted, its fluorescent lights flickering. As she filled her tank, her phone buzzed.
Her mother.
"Aiko, did you bring Coco's dog food?"
Aiko sighed. "I'll get it now, Mom."
Inside, the store was eerily quiet. The air felt... wrong.
She found the pet food aisle, but her attention was drawn to a figure at the far end. A man stood motionless, his back to her. He wore a long coat—odd for the mild weather. His dark hair was unkempt, and his hands hung stiffly at his sides.
"こんばんは、先生 (Good evening, sir)," she greeted politely.
No response
She frowned, stepping closer. "Excuse me, do you know where the dog food is?"
Silence
His lips parted slightly, but no words came out. Aiko's breath hitched. Something about him felt... off. The kind of wrong that sent ice crawling up her spine.
Unnerved, she snatched a bag of dog food and hurried to the counter. The shopkeeper, an older man with tired eyes, rang her up.
"Where are you headed to?" The shopkeeper asked
"Just traveling. Looking for adventure."
The shopkeeper's expression darkened. "You're going over the bridge, aren't you?"
Aiko raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, why?"
He leaned in slightly. "They say a young woman died in an accident there years ago. Since then, strange things happen. People who cross it vanish. Those who go looking for them... never come back."
A chill slithered down her spine.
"If you see a woman in white asking for a ride—don't stop. Just drive."
Aiko forced a laugh. "Ghost stories, huh?"
The shopkeeper's gaze was dead serious. "Call it what you want. Just don't stop."
