The sounds of the waves hitting the shore have always given me comfort. The slight breeze from the ocean. The smell of the sea. The reflection of the moon in the waters, and the twinkling of light from the stars in the night sky.
"How did I end up like this?" The slightest whisper left my lips as I sat in the sand by the waters.
What is there to stop me from giving up and slipping away with the waves?
I never knew my parents. I was born to be an orphan, raised to be a slave. They abandoned me to live a life of torture. I will never understand how two people would leave me to the unknown instead of killing me themselves.
Eighteen years ago, the Silver Moon pack warriors found a crying baby floating in a basket on the river.
With nothing but an opal necklace clenched in her tiny fist, they took "pity" upon her and took her to the Alpha.
The Alpha kept her for the sole purpose of providing an heir for the Silver Moon Pack. His Luna and child died fifteen years prior and it is against the rules set forth by the King and Queen to mate with another wolf unless the confirmed death of both mates. So the Alpha would keep the baby hidden from the outside world until she was of age, mate with her, and kill her once his bloodline is secured.
That baby was me, and I wished with all my heart that the river had swallowed me instead. But life had a different plan.
"Emory!"
I instinctively hold my breath as the thunderous roar of my name reaches my ears. I look up, only to see the piercing red eyes of my furious Beta, scorning me from the castle gates. I rush to my feet and run to him, dreading the punishment that I must now face.
"Beta Phineas, forgive me. I just took a moment to get some air."
Not even a second goes by until I feel Beta Phineas tightly grab my wrist and drag me through the castle halls.
"How many times must we go over this? Alpha Silas gave you an opportunity to live and you repay him by trying to run off? Your life is his and you are to remain alive until he says otherwise."
His voice sent an eerie shudder through me and I flinch as the harshness of his words resonate in my mind.
...You are to remain alive until he says otherwise...
We stop walking as we reach the basement cell that I have become so familiar with. He throws me in with all his strength and my body hits the cold floor. I hear a crack and can feel that my wrist has snapped. Since I did not shift at sixteen, I cannot heal as quickly as the other members in the pack.
"Beta Phineas, please! It won't happen again! Please don't leave me here!" I try to beg, knowing that the outcome will not change.
"You insolent child. We gave you the slightest taste of freedom and you forget what your role is.
You will remain in this cell until the mating ceremony next week. You will provide Alpha Silas with an heir before we rid this world of a pest like you!"
He walks away, leaving me in the dark, cold cell. The cell is where the pack warriors practice their torture methods for rogue wolves. By throwing me in here, Beta Phineas has given them permission to perfect their methods on me. But they must not ruin my purity for Alpha Silas.
The sound of my sobs bounce off the cell walls as I await the torment that is to follow.
