It had been four days since the mugging, and three since Y/n found herself texting casually with a mutant ninja turtle between cappuccino orders.
The early shift at the café was its usual mix of espresso steam, burnt toast, and too many customers asking for oat milk lattes extra hot but not too hot. Y/n worked the register, her hair tied up in a messy bun, dark circles under her eyes from another restless night.
But every time her phone buzzed in her apron pocket, she smiled.
Leo:
So what's the coffee code today? Mission Blackout Roast? Operation Croissant Rescue?
She smirked and typed back with one hand while steaming milk with the other.
Y/n:
Operation Customer Who Asked for a "Pumpkin Spice" in May. I might walk out.
A minute later:
Leo:
Request denied. Ninja protocol: hold the line. I'll portal you a donut later as backup
She chuckled under her breath and shook her head.
"Y/n!" her manager called. "You texting again?"
"Just... taking an order," she lied, slipping her phone back in.
The rest of her shift passed in a haze of coffee grounds and exhaustion, but knowing Leo was just one message away gave the day a strange kind of lightness.
After closing, as she wiped down the last sticky table, her phone buzzed again.
Leo:
You out yet? I'm nearby. Wanna walk home together—well, from the rooftops? Way cooler.
Y/n glanced out the window. The sun was sinking, golden light slanting across the sidewalk.
She smiled.
Y/n:
Meet me by the alley next to the florist. I owe you a story about the Pumpkin Spice guy.
Two minutes later, a shimmer of blue light opened beside the dumpster.
Leo stepped out, twirling one of his swords, his expression half-grin, half-"Your hero has arrived."
"You're early," she said.
Leo shrugged, eyes hidden beneath his blue bandana, swords sheathed behind him like he was pretending not to be a walking cartoon hero. "Figured you might need an escort. You are mug-magnet material, apparently."
She rolled her eyes. "Thanks, I think?"
He offered a hand, helping her up onto the fire escape. "I didn't mean it like that. I just—look, I was bored. That's all."
But that wasn't all.
Leo had started looking for excuses to swing by her block more often. Or hover near the café's rooftop between missions. He told himself it was for safety. Just making sure she didn't get in trouble again. Just a good deed. Ninja business.
Totally not because she laughed at his jokes.
Totally not because her eyes did that crinkle-thing when she smiled.
Totally not because when she texted him first, his heart did a dumb little thunk.
As they leapt across rooftops under the stars, Y/n looked over at him and asked, "Why do you really keep showing up?"
He scoffed. "What, I need a reason to hang out with a civilian now? Maybe I'm just an excellent public servant."
"You're a ninja vigilante in a bandana. You're not exactly subtle."
"I could be subtle," he shot back. "If I wasn't, you know, awesome."
She raised an eyebrow, catching the flicker of nervousness in his expression.
"You like hanging out with me," she said, not accusing—just curious.
Leo looked away, suddenly very interested in the distant skyline. "I mean, yeah. You're... cool. For a human."
"For a human?" she echoed, grinning.
"I mean—just. You're funny. And brave. And your sarcasm's, like, 75% as good as mine. That's all."
"That's all?" she asked.
He gave a dismissive wave of his three-fingered hand. "Totally. I mean, it's not like I think about you when I'm not around or anything."
"Uh-huh."
Leo awkwardly coughed and continued on to her building dropping her off at her fire escape.
"Thanks Lee," Y/n said and she gave him a hug and headed inside her apartment.
And with that, he turned and took a giant leap to the next rooftop, as if trying to escape the heat crawling up his neck.
Y/n laughed and sat on her bed, already typing out a message on her phone to send later:
Y/n:
Made it home in one piece, thanks to my rooftop chauffeur.
Leo:
You're welcome. I charge one pizza slice per trip. Late fees apply.
Y/n:
Guess I owe you like... five slices by now?
Leo:
Seven. You bailed on that Tuesday shift remember? I still made the trip.
Also, pineapple is non-negotiable.
Y/n:
Okay now you're the criminal.
Leo:
Hey, I'm a turtle with taste.
Y/n:
Now that's worth fighting about.
Leo:
You're trouble, y/n.
Y/n:
So are you.
Leo:
Okay but... seriously.
I've never done this before. The whole "talking to someone outside the lair who isn't screaming or holding a laser."
Y/n:
You're doing fine. Except for the pineapple thing.
Leo:
No one's perfect.
Y/n:
Good. Now go to sleep, hero. You've got a city to save tomorrow.
She rolls her eyes as she sends him the message
Leo:
Only if you text me good morning.
Y/n:
Deal.
(He stares at her last message a long moment. Smiling like an idiot. Then finally types:)
Leo:
Sweet dreams, troublemaker.
