Age-13
The clock glowed 10:31 PM. Your bedroom was lit only by the bluish hue of your phone screen and the faint moonlight pouring in through the sheer curtains. Everyone else had gone to bed hours ago—or so you thought.
You'd asked earlier if you could go to your friend's house for a bit. It was just a casual hangout—nothing wild, just a couple hours with music, snacks, and laughing. But your mum, Taylor, had said no without hesitation. Something about it being too late, too dark, and way too risky. Her arms had been crossed. Her tone? Final.
You hadn't planned to argue. Not out loud, anyway.
So instead, you'd planned something else.
Now dressed in a black hoodie, black leggings, and the quietest socks you owned, you were halfway through executing your brilliant plan. Your window faced the garden out back—quiet, open, perfect for sneaking out. It was a decent drop to the soft grass below, about six feet, but you weren't worried. You'd climbed the tree out front a hundred times before. You had balance. You had stealth. You were a 13-year-old ninja.
And you were completely unaware that everybody was watching you from the garden below.
They had been outside for the last twenty minutes, drinking tea, eating popcorn, and stargazing. Taylor had come out first to check on the cat that had gone missing around 9 PM, and then Billie had followed her out with a bowl of popcorn. Selena had stepped out to stretch after watching a documentary, and Gracie had joined them with her sketchbook and a hoodie. Sabrina had come out just for the vibe, holding a mason jar of lemonade. They'd all been deep in conversation—until Taylor looked up.
"Is that... Is that her climbing out her window?" she asked, incredulous.
Billie narrowed her eyes. "Oh my god. It is."
"What is she wearing? Is she dressed in all black?" Gracie giggled. "Is she robbing someone?"
Selena put a hand over her mouth, stifling a laugh. "She's not serious right now."
"I think she's trying to sneak out," Taylor said flatly, and then added, "From the second floor."
"This is better than reality TV," Sabrina whispered.
You were halfway down the ivy-covered wall now, your little backpack tossed neatly to the grass below. You didn't even pause. You just climbed like you'd been planning this for weeks.
That's when Billie called up to you, "Should we tell her now or wait until she hits the ground?"
You froze mid-climb. One foot braced against the windowsill, your hands gripping the ivy vines like ropes.
Your head slowly turned.
And you saw them.
All of them.
Taylor. Billie. Selena. Gracie. Sabrina. Standing in the glow of the garden lights, looking up at you like you were a wildlife creature they'd caught mid-escape. Your jaw dropped.
"Oh, come on," you groaned, feeling the red rush to your cheeks.
Taylor raised an eyebrow. "You want to come back in through the window or should I unlock the back door?"
"I was just...getting fresh air!" you tried.
"With a backpack?" Billie asked, pretending to be puzzled.
"Wearing all black?" Gracie chimed in.
"At ten-thirty at night?" Selena added, raising her cup of tea.
You knew you were toast. Defeated, you sighed and started climbing back up. It was harder going up than down, and your pride stung more than your muscles. By the time you swung yourself back through the window, Taylor was already opening your bedroom door, arms crossed like the final boss in a video game.
She didn't say anything for a second.
She just looked at you.
And you looked at the floor.
"You're lucky you didn't fall," she said, stepping inside. Her voice wasn't loud—but it wasn't soft, either. It was that calm, serious voice that meant you were in trouble.
"I wasn't gonna be gone that long..." you mumbled.
She stepped closer, her face full of concern and disbelief. "That's not the point, sweetheart. You didn't tell anyone. You tried to sneak out of your bedroom window. You could've broken your neck. And where were you even going?"
"To see a friend," you admitted quietly.
Taylor sighed, rubbing her forehead. "Do you know how dangerous that is?"
You nodded, but not really.
"I'm not trying to be the bad guy," she added, sitting on the edge of your bed. "But you need to understand—there are rules for a reason. What if something happened to you? What if we hadn't caught you?"
You didn't know how to respond. Part of you was still embarrassed. Another part of you felt like crying—not because you were caught, but because you'd disappointed her.
"I'm sorry," you whispered.
Taylor looked at you for a moment, then patted the space beside her.
You sat down.
"I get it," she said gently. "You wanted to see your friend. You felt cooped up. You didn't think it was a big deal. But it is. It is a big deal when you're thirteen and climbing out of a window at night."
"I didn't think anyone would see," you said, cheeks burning.
Taylor actually smiled a little. "Well, next time you plan a jailbreak, check to make sure the entire household isn't outside watching the stars."
You groaned and hid your face in your hands. "This is so humiliating."
Downstairs, you heard Billie shout up, "Hey! For the record, your technique was solid! I give it a 9/10. Execution? Not so much."
"And your landing could've used some work!" Sabrina added.
Gracie yelled, "Still better than my last tree fall!"
You let out a small laugh.
Taylor sighed but smiled softly at you. "You're grounded."
"I figured."
"One week. No phone tonight. And tomorrow? You're helping Billie clean out the garage."
"Punishment and child labor?"
She smirked. "Actions have consequences."
You nodded, finally feeling the tension leave your shoulders. Taylor leaned over and kissed your forehead before standing up.
"I love you. Now go get changed and get into bed. No more ninja missions tonight."
"Yes, Mum."
As she left the room, you heard laughter drifting in from the garden again. The others were still talking about it.
"She really thought she was sneaky!" Billie was saying.
"I believed in her," Selena laughed.
"She almost made it, too," Gracie added.
You pulled on your pajamas, still blushing but secretly glad you had them around—even if they ruined your escape.
And honestly that fall would've hurt way more than your pride ever did.
