Bzzzzz. Bzzzzz.
An eerie and irritating TV static plagued the room, though a box would be a more fitting name. A purple light, the only light source, glowed dimly over. The walls and floors were so run down that one could trip if careless. Everything seemed like an uneasy experience for anyone to stay.
Yet, in the center of it all, Mono sat.
Surrounded by numerous TV boxes, the boy wore a brown shirt under a trenchcoat and brown pants. Though damaged and altered over time, the ends of his coat and shirt were shredded, with scratches covering the fabric. He looked young, about the age of a teenager. This would be the time for every youth to have the freedom to make good memories before adulthood.
This teenager didn't.
Bzzzzz. Bzzzzz.
The TV in front of him flickered with static before shifting. On-screen, a little boy in a trenchcoat and a girl in a yellow raincoat traveled through the ruins of a broken world. They traveled hand-in-hand through the wild forest and the distorted city. They ran from the monsters and had their life on a string, but eventually, they got through. They showed friendship and trust as they helped each other through life-or-death situations. A great friendship Mono once had.
Once...
Mono stepped out of the chair and moved closer to the TVs. The air in the room was thick with the stench of old dust and decaying electronics. Every step left a faint echo in the eerie silence, broken only by the incessant static. His fingers tingled from the cold metal of the TV frames, the sharp edges biting into his skin as though the room itself sought to consume him. His breath came faster, his chest rising and falling with the weight of his thoughts. His hand hovered over the screen, the static flickering before him like a mocking reflection of his own fractured mind. Each failed attempt gnawed at him, each broken memory a reminder of what had been lost. He was so close - closer than he'd ever been before, but the light of freedom was let away from him, a hollow ache deep within.
Mono's oceanic eyes stared at the two figures on the TV once again, reminiscing about an unforgettable past. The little duo jumped and played on the mildly flooded street, splashing water at each other while giggling. They had once been inseparable - partners in the darkest of times, laughing as if the world would never fall apart. Those fleeting moments, when her hand gripped his tightly, felt like the only truth in a collapsing world. Yet, that same hand was the one that had let him away.
*CRASH*
Then, his patience snapped. His fist collided with the glass in a brutal eruption of pent-up rage. The action left sharps on his bleeding hand. Yet, no painful expressions or regrets - Anger and frustration were.
Why did she do that?!
*CRASH*
Why did she drop me after all those moments together?!
*CRASH*
Why did she betray me?!!!
*CRASH*
*CRASH*
*CRASH*
Why?...Six...
...
Was it her disappointment when I failed to save her twice?
Was it my naive delusion to 'save the world' that led to more danger?
Or was it the moment I destroyed the music box to release her from the illusion?
That was what he had thought for the first 4 years stuck here. For a while after, he wondered if he had done anything to lead to her action.
Now, he didn't care anymore.
"..."
Yet, tears still dropped from his exhausted eyes, which he tried to wipe away, leaving a fainted trait. How many times he had done this?
He wanted a life without danger. A life without much concern for survival.
He wanted a safe place where he could enjoy time with his friends.
He only wanted - a home.
