The air was thick with smoke from last night's campfire, the embers still faintly glowing in the morning light. The quiet buzz of insects and the soft rustle of trees made it feel like the world was still turning, even though everyone at the quarry knew better by now. The world had stopped, cracked in half, and nobody was quite sure how to piece it back together.
Oliver sat cross-legged on a rock overlooking the water, his hoodie zipped all the way up despite the early Georgia heat. His fluffy dark brown hair curled just slightly from sweat and humidity, but he didn't bother brushing it back. Pale blue eyes stared out across the quarry, distant and heavy despite how young they were—seventeen but carved by grief in a way that made him feel older than he ought to.
Behind him, Shane watched silently for a few moments, arms crossed, the weight of a former life slung over his shoulders like his old sheriff's uniform. The camp had gotten quieter since breakfast—most were off scavenging or washing clothes by the creek. But Oliver stayed up here alone, same as he did most mornings.
"You ain't eaten anything," Shane finally said, stepping closer. His voice was calm but firm, like a cop still trying to enforce rules in a lawless world.
Oliver didn't turn. "Not hungry."
Shane let out a slow breath, walking until he was close enough to crouch down beside him. "I get it. Appetite's the first thing to go when the world flips on you."
There was a beat of silence between them—just the soft ripple of water and the calls of birds pretending like nothing was wrong.
Oliver finally glanced over at him, his voice low. "Do you think they're still out there? People like us?"
Shane looked out toward the water too. "I think... some are. Gotta believe that, or what's the point of gettin' up every morning?"
The boy's jaw clenched, his gaze hardening. "My parents didn't make it."
"I know," Shane said gently. "You told me that the night you came in. You had blood on your hands and tears in your eyes."
Oliver looked away quickly, embarrassed. "Didn't mean to cry like that."
"Hell, kid," Shane muttered, almost fondly, "if you didn't cry, I'd be worried."
A silence passed. Shane stayed crouched beside him, watching the side of Oliver's face—still rounded with youth, though the shadow of something hardened lingered in his expression. He wasn't just mourning—he was surviving.
"You been sleepin' okay?"
Oliver gave a small shrug. "Hard to. I hear the groans... out past the trees sometimes. Makes it hard to close my eyes."
Shane nodded. "Yeah. That sound... it gets in your head. I keep a bat beside me at night just in case."
"I don't have a weapon," Oliver said, almost like a confession. "I've got nothing. Just this hoodie and... my dad's old lighter."
Shane's eyes flicked to the faint outline of the silver lighter in Oliver's pocket. "You got more than nothing, kid. You got your head on straight. You don't panic. And you listen."
Oliver finally looked at him—really looked—and Shane caught the flicker of admiration behind those pale blue eyes. Shane had seen it in others before. People needed something steady. Something solid.
"You wanna learn how to shoot?" Shane asked.
Oliver blinked. "Seriously?"
"Dead serious," Shane said, standing up and brushing off his jeans. "World ain't gonna go easy on you just 'cause you're young. Might as well start givin' it hell back."
Oliver hesitated, then slowly stood too. He was a little shorter than Shane but not by much—still had a few inches to go, probably. Shane noticed the way his hands fidgeted at his sides, nervous and eager all at once.
"Alright," Oliver said. "Teach me."
There was something quiet and certain in the way he said it—like a thread of hope tightening around a frayed edge.
Shane gave a faint smile and led the way.
And just like that, a slow bond began to form. Not loud. Not flashy. Just steady... like the sound of boots on dirt, the click of a safety being turned off, and the soft murmur of someone finally not feeling alone anymore.
