Waking Up

I opened my eyes slowly, letting them adjust to the dim light. I blinked a couple of times and sat up. Looking around, I noticed that I was in a small room. There were no paintings on the walls, or lanterns hung up. The room was completely empty except for the small bed in the corner that I was sitting on.

I looked down at myself and checked for any sign that would tell me where I was. Nothing. Next, I checked myself for any injuries. Why can't I remember anything? I didn't find any.

I put my feet on the floor and stood up. Something by the bed caught my attention. It was a staff of some sort. I had a feeling that the staff was important. Better safe than sorry. I bended down and picked it up.

Brushingof the layers of dirt I saw an inscription on the side. 'Kaori' underneath that it had more writing. 'The sky is your limit'

Kaori...that must be my name. The more I thought about it the better I felt. My name is Kaori. I clutched the staff tighter in my hand and walked out of the tiny room to begin looking for any clues that would tell me where I was. Or who I was.

I pushed open the heavy wooden doors and walked outside. Snow covered the ground in big piles. I looked out at the horizon. All I could see was mountains and fog. Turning back to the building, I realized that it resembled a castle...or a temple.

Right in front of the doors was a wooden statute. It looked like an old man. I walked up to it and studied it closer. He was bald, had on these long robes, and a necklace. On the necklace were these weird symbols. A bunch of swirls if you ask me.

Then without thinking, I bowed to the statute. A million pictures and fragments danced around my head. It was like a bomb went off when I did that. I dropped my staff to the ground and clutched my head, trying to sort through it all.

There was a lot of kids...they were doing something with their hands. And a boy...tattoos covering his body. Then people coming up the mountain...fire...screaming...darkness.

I slowly lowered my hands. One thought kept flashing over and over in my head, like a neon sign. Avatar. I stood back up on shaky legs and took a deep breath. Wasn't it a good thing that I was remembering something?

I took another deep breath, picked up my staff, and walked until I found an open area. When I bowed, memories came back. So if I try out some of the moves those people were doing I'll remember something else. I set my staff down on a flat rock and spread my feet far apart. Then I put my hands up, slightly bent, and moved them in a full circle.

Whoosh! I fell backwards on my butt. I stared down at my hands in amazement. What did I just do? I got in the stance again but this time I planted my feet more firmly into the ground. As I moved my hands I saw the most amazing thing. I made the air move.

I practiced for a little bit longer until I was tired. I sat back in the snow and thought about everything. Woke up in a strange place, almost no memories, nothing but mountains as far as the eye can see...oh, and I can move air! I bet that's what those other people where doing in my memories. Maybe I was one of them. But...where did they go? So far I haven't seen another living creature.

I yawned, interrupting my own thoughts, and got up to grab my staff. It has been a long day. Maybe I'd be better at solving mysteries when I've had more sleep. Slowly, I made my way back to the little bedroom where i woke up. Tomorrow I would try to find out more of who I was.

I lasted down on the stone bed, exhausted but excited. Tomorrow I would find out who I was. And maybe find out more about the Avatar. My eyelids got heavier and heavier until I couldn't hold them up any longer. And with a final sigh, I drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
