Y/n L/n's POV
I've always been a shadow in the corridors of Campbell Hall High School. Quiet. Reserved. A little out of place. Today was no different, just another Wednesday to get through. Honestly, it didn't matter much. There was nothing waiting for me at home anyway. I've been bouncing between foster homes for the last 15 years, never staying in one place for too long. No one ever seemed to want to adopt me, not after they found out about my parents. They'd heard the stories—about the drugs, the alcohol—and no one wanted a kid raised in that kind of environment. It's been like this for as long as I can remember—always the outsider, always invisible.
I ran my fingers through my dark brown hair and closed my locker, grabbing the books I needed for my next class—English. I wasn't exactly a fan of the subject, but I always worked hard in it, just like I did in every other class. No shortcuts for me.
As I walked into the classroom, I nodded to Mr. Windsor. "Hey, Mr. Windsor," I muttered, keeping my voice low as usual.
"Morning, Y/n," he replied with a smile, his eyes glancing up from the papers he was grading.
I made my way to the back of the room, taking my usual unassigned seat in the corner. The noise around me was overwhelming—laughter, chatter, the clink of a basketball bouncing off the floor. I pulled out my notebook, trying to block it all out. Winter and Elizabeth Olsen sat near the front, the school's cheerleaders and the "It" girls, effortlessly commanding everyone's attention.
"Did you see that pass?" Felix's voice echoed from the other side of the room as he tossed the ball to Ryder. "Trying to impress anyone today?" he joked, his grin wide.
"Shut up, Felix," Winter shot back with a laugh. "Like you'd ever have a chance."
Elizabeth chuckled, giving Winter a playful shove. "Leave him alone, Winter. He's just trying to get noticed."
Meanwhile, I sank further into my seat, wishing I could blend into the wall behind me. All I wanted was to get through the day unnoticed, but it was hard to ignore the constant chaos around me. It seemed like everyone else had their place, while I was just... there.
The bell rang, signaling the start of class, and the room quieted, though the tension from the earlier noise still lingered. I opened my notebook, trying to focus on the lesson, but I could still hear snippets of conversation from the other students.
"Have you seen the new movie?" Elizabeth's voice reached me from the front. "It's supposed to be amazing."
"Yeah, I heard it's pretty good," Winter replied, flipping through her phone as if trying to act casual. "Maybe we can all go this weekend."
I kept my head down, pretending to scribble notes as Mr. Windsor started the lesson. His voice was a steady hum in the background, but I couldn't really focus. My mind kept wandering back to Elizabeth. I wondered if she ever noticed me—or if she'd ever even care.
"Y/n," Mr. Windsor suddenly called, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Can you read the next paragraph?"
My heart skipped. "Uh, sure," I mumbled, feeling the heat rush to my cheeks.
cleared my throat and began reading, my voice barely above a whisper. I couldn't help but feel every pair of eyes in the room on me. When I finished, Mr. Windsor gave me an encouraging smile. "Good job, Y/n. Now, what do you think about this part?" he asked, directing the question at me.
I swallowed, not sure how to answer, but before I could speak up, Elizabeth's voice interrupted.
"I think it's about understanding the bigger picture, right?" she said, her voice confident, like she always had the answer.
