Lena was pissed.

Who wouldn’t be?

For three years, Kara had been her best friend, her closest confidant. The one person who had never treated her like a Luthor, who had never made her feel like she had to prove herself. But the entire time, Kara had been lying to her. Every coffee run, every late-night conversation, every heartfelt moment—they had all been under false pretenses.

Because Kara wasn’t just Kara Danvers.

She was Supergirl.

Lena scoffed, swirling the whiskey in her glass before downing it in one quick gulp. She had been furious when she first found out, demanding answers, shouting accusations, and when Kara had tried—really tried—to explain, Lena had shut her down.

“You lied to me,” she had spat. “You’re just like everyone else.”

The memory made her stomach twist with guilt. That hadn’t been fair.

It had been weeks since their last conversation, and the silence between them was deafening. Lena had thrown herself into her work, barely leaving L-Corp, and when she did, she avoided anything that reminded her of Kara—CatCo, Noonan’s, even the color blue.

Deep down, though, anger wasn’t the real problem.

She missed Kara.

The realization stung, but there was no denying it. Losing Kara felt like losing a part of herself, and she had been too damn proud to admit it.

She sighed, rubbing her temples as she turned back to the numerous files littering her desk. Maybe if she focused on her work, she could ignore the ache in her chest.

Then the explosion hit.

The force rocked the entire building, sending Lena flying backward. The last thing she saw was fire consuming her office before darkness swallowed her whole.

---

Kara hadn’t been sleeping well.

She’d thrown herself into being Supergirl, using every spare moment to save someone, stop a robbery, or prevent some minor disaster. Anything to keep her mind off Lena.

She didn’t go to CatCo anymore, making up some excuse about needing time off. She knew if she saw Lena, she would break all over again.

So she stayed away.

Tonight was supposed to be a quiet patrol. She was just about to call it a night when a deafening explosion rang through the city. Kara’s head snapped toward the source—flames engulfed the top floors of L-Corp, the smoke billowing into the sky.

Lena.

Kara didn’t hesitate.

She shot through the air, the wind whipping against her face as she broke the sound barrier. The sight that greeted her when she arrived made her heart stop. The entire floor—Lena’s office—was in flames.

No, no, no.

She didn’t think, didn’t breathe. She just acted.

Using her freeze breath, she extinguished the flames in seconds, ice coating the remains of the room. Once the fire was out, she focused, tuning out the chaos to listen—desperate to hear that one heartbeat she knew better than her own.

For a terrifying moment, she heard nothing.

Then—there. Faint, slow, but there.

Kara’s heart pounded as she used her x-ray vision to scan the debris. Beneath the rubble, she spotted Lena’s motionless form.

“Hold on, Lena,” Kara whispered, her voice shaking.

She landed and immediately started digging, her hands moving faster than the human eye could follow. She tossed aside chunks of concrete and metal until finally, finally, she reached Lena.

She was unconscious, her dark hair matted with dust and blood. Her pulse was weak. Too weak.

Panic surged through Kara’s veins as she scooped Lena into her arms, cradling her like she was the most precious thing in the world.

“You’re gonna be okay,” she murmured, voice cracking. “Just stay with me.”

Then, without a second thought, she took off—flying straight to the DEO.
