Chapter 1: The Forgotten Miracle
The Teiko Middle School Basketball Team was undefeated.
To call them strong would be an understatement.
They crushed every opponent that stood before them. Schools from across Japan feared seeing Teiko's name in tournament brackets. Games that should have been competitive often ended before halftime.
At the center of it all stood five monsters.
Aomine Daiki.
Midorima Shintaro.
Murasakibara Atsushi.
Kise Ryota.
Akashi Seijuro.
Together they would one day become known as the Generation of Miracles.
And beside them stood the Phantom Sixth Man, Kuroko Tetsuya.
Their names would become legendary.
Their talents would be remembered for years.
But history forgot one player.
Not because he lacked talent.
Not because he wasn't good enough.
But because Teiko had no need to remember anyone who wasn't one of its stars.
His name was Rai Hiroshi.
And nobody remembered him.
The sound of basketballs echoed throughout Teiko's gymnasium.
"Again!"
Players sprinted across the court.
Shoes squeaked.
Whistles blew.
The first string practiced as coaches watched closely.
Rai sat quietly at the end of the bench.
A basketball rested in his lap.
His eyes followed the action on the court.
Aomine blew past three defenders without effort.
Murasakibara blocked a shot so hard it nearly hit the ceiling.
Midorima launched a shot from half-court.
Swish.
Nothing but net.
The coaches applauded.
The players cheered.
Rai lowered his eyes.
Of course they did.
Those guys were monsters.
Everyone knew it.
The problem was that nobody cared about anyone else.
"Rai."
He looked up.
A second-string player sat beside him.
"You gonna ask Coach for playing time again?"
Rai snorted.
"What's the point?"
The player laughed.
"Exactly."
Rai clenched the basketball tighter.
He hated hearing that.
Not because it wasn't true.
Because it was.
The first string never came out.
The Generation of Miracles played nearly every meaningful minute.
