Triggers warnings: smoking, death (at the end)
She was the most hard working woman he'd ever seen. Being a god he technically never got hungry, but he always visited her dinner just to see her pretty face. She'd grown used to seeing him since he'd come every day saying he was there for her pie.
She'd call him baby, it always made his stomach flip. "Here you go, baby" "need something to wash that down with, baby?" "I was waiting for you, was worried you wouldn't come in today, baby." She called everyone baby, but he'd pretend it was only for him.
Once another waitress tried to take his order. he Insisted she always served him, but the new lady informed him she was out of town for a funeral. And so he went without his pie and his girl that day.
He asked for her number at least once a week, and she never replied, just a shrug or a side eye. Despite that she always served him with a smile.
"Could you bless me with your number this fine morning?" His face broke into a practiced grin.
She pressed her lips together and looked down at him. That was a no.
Despite always asking for her number he didn't really need it, he could show up wherever she is whenever he wanted. He thought she might be weirded out by it so he doesn't do that.
In fact, he believes the man who picks her up from work every day is her boyfriend. He automatically hates him, for obvious reasons. On top of that he's generally just ugly. He wouldn't wish a man like that on his worst enemy. Who would choose him over the god of the sun? Her taste was questionable. Nonetheless her pies were delicious and her face was just as sweet.
He caught her on her way out one night, purse slung over her shoulder, cigarette in her hand.
"About that number..."
Once again she gave him her signature look.
"I'm not gonna stop till you say yes." He park himself in her personal space, but she just laughs.
"The answer won't change."
"That's okay." His head tilts. Every angle of her face was perfect. "I'll ask until you're gray and old, and hopefully single."
She rolled her eyes, placing a cigarette between her teeth and lighting it.
"Won't happen, I'm engaged."
He didn't know that "Doesn't mean he won't die unexpectedly" he murmurs under his breath. "Come on, one chance, please?"
Taking a drag she shakes her head. An old car that squeals obnoxiously loud with an obnoxiously ugly guy driving it, pulls up.
"There he is." She takes one last drag and places the cigarette in his mouth. "I'll see you tomorrow." She says one last time.
Ever since that day her wedding ring glinted brighter in the sun. He wonders if she got a bigger ring because it's more noticeable now.
She couldn't be his. Never. Not even as a god could he separate them. He's have to watch the girl he loved fall for another man, marry him, have his kids. And for seventy two years that's what he did.
He served her until the day she died, never once did she question why he never aged. Perhaps she eventually forgot about him, that's what happens when you get married.
It was hard to be in love with ninety four year old, married woman with seven kids. Yes seven whole kids, she and her husband loved each other very very much. The thought was sickening,
Even harder than that was loving a dead person. What do you do what you can't see someone anymore? It's worse than hell, because at least hell would have the temptation of her.
