The car rolled to a stop in front of the towering brick buildings, sunlight glinting off the massive windows that framed the entrance. Asi exhaled slowly, gripping the handles of her tote bag as she took in the scene—students streaming across the courtyard, some dragging suitcases, others laughing in tight circles, already familiar with one another. There was an air of effortless belonging here, something she wasn't sure she had yet.

This was it. The start of something new.

She stepped out of the car, the late-summer warmth settling around her shoulders. The driver, an older man with a quiet demeanor, moved to pull her suitcase from the trunk, but Asi reached for it first. "I got it, thanks." She wasn't used to letting others do things for her.

A few deep breaths, then she started moving toward the main building, where a long table had been set up with a banner welcoming new students. The line moved quickly, and within minutes, she reached the front. A student worker—probably an upperclassman—handed her an orientation packet and a keycard without much ceremony. "Welcome to campus. Dorm assignments are in the packet. Class schedules should be live in the student portal."

"Thanks," Asi murmured, already scanning the materials as she stepped aside. She wasn't sure what she had been expecting—some sort of grand introduction, maybe. But no one seemed particularly interested in her arrival, and that was fine. Better to blend in, at least for now.

She flipped through the packet, barely registering the words until a voice beside her cut through her focus. "Overwhelming, isn't it?"

Asi glanced up to find a girl standing next to her, watching with mild amusement. She was tall, effortlessly put together, with sharp eyes that seemed to take in everything at once. Her posture was relaxed but confident, like someone who had done this before.

"A bit," Asi admitted, closing the folder. "First day. Just trying to take it all in."

The girl hummed in understanding. "I remember that feeling. It's easier once you realize most people are just as lost as you are." She extended a hand. "I'm Cemre. Sophomore. You?"

"Asi."

Cemre's handshake was firm but easy, a balance between friendliness and self-assurance. "Nice to meet you. So, what's your first impression?"

Asi exhaled a quiet laugh. "Intimidating."

Cemre smirked. "Fair. But also? Worth it—if you know how to navigate it."

Asi studied her for a second. "And you do?"

"I like to think so," Cemre said with a knowing tilt of her head. "Want some unsolicited advice?"

Asi raised a brow. "That depends on the quality of the advice."

Cemre chuckled. "Alright, first rule of survival—don't get caught up in the noise. There's a lot of posturing here, a lot of people trying to prove they belong. Just focus on what you came for."

Asi nodded slowly. "Sounds reasonable."

"And second," Cemre continued, "find people who actually make this place worth it. You'll need them."

Asi considered that. "And you?"

Cemre's smirk returned. "I make it worth it for myself."

That wasn't exactly an answer, but Asi found herself intrigued anyway. Before she could press, Cemre nodded toward the courtyard. "Come on. I'll show you around. It's easy to get lost in the first week, and looking lost here? Not a great move."

Asi hesitated only briefly before falling into step beside her. She had always preferred figuring things out on her own, but there was something about Cemre—sharp, observant, and unapologetically at ease—that made her seem like someone worth knowing.
