This book developed from a project completed in my first year of university when I was 17. Having recently lived in Greece and explored Delphi, including the area beneath the Temple of Apollo, with my mother, a knowledgeable enthusiast of archaeology and ancient history, I was inspired to write the initial chapter as a short poetic-prose narrative. The rich cultural and historical significance of Delphi, combined with my academic journey as a classical archaeologist, sparked an idea that has been with me since.
A few months ago, while revisiting that short story to edit and publish it independently, I felt compelled to expand it into the present historical novel. My theory that the priests of Delphi, beyond their religious duties, also played deliberate and conscious roles in political events, first occurred to me during those early years. This theory, which was my own, is also supported by scholarly research, aligning with the historical context of Delphi's political influence.
Furthermore, it seemed reasonable that such powerful organisations would have operated their own networks of agents, akin to modern intelligence networks, including intelligence gathering in regions like Lydia and Persia. This idea parallels the influence and reach of institutions like the Vatican today.
Additionally, Croisos, the last king of Lydia, is renowned for introducing the first true gold and silver coins around the mid-6th century BC (at the time of the Greek Archaic era). Prior to this, Lydians used electrum coins, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver. These coins, bearing Croisos' image or symbols, significantly influenced the economy and trade in Lydia and surrounding regions, including Persia and Greek cities like Delphi. This historical element is known from the writings of Herodotus and archaeological findings, and it is woven into the narrative to reflect the economic backdrop of the era and add depth to the characters' journey.
Moreover, although my narrative developed naturally and spontaneously, I was already aware, although I did not apply it consciously nor set out to do this, that the theme of lost and regained lineages was common in ancient Greek and Persian legends and other ancient fairy tales as well, likely reflecting actual situations. This includes such fairy tales as Snow White. Families being engaged in blood and cold feuds was common historically in ancient Greece and other ancient societies.
As well, this novel includes a unique gothic essence, blending ancient historical themes with elements of mystery, espionage, and romance to create an immersive and captivating experience.
While this novel explores themes of power, influence, and corruption within religious institutions, it is not intended to make a specific political statement. The story evolved organically, drawing on historical facts, scholarly theories, and creative licence to create a compelling narrative. My goal is to provide an engaging and immersive experience that highlights the intricate relationships between religion, politics, and personal ambitions in the ancient world.
This novel is plot and character-based, set against a rich historical background. In this book, I've blended factual history with creative storytelling, which includes a spy network operated by the High Priests of Delphi and supported by the Polis. My experiences and background in classical archaeology have deeply informed this narrative, and my present studies in Medicine as an MD candidate have also contributed.
I hope you enjoy this journey through an ancient world where the boundaries between myth and reality are nebulous, and where every character and event is a piece of the intricate tale I've woven from both my academic pursuits and creative passions.
