Jane nodded

“Sing something.”

“No” she said smiling

“Why not?”

“Because  I barely know you.”
“so you only sing to people you know?”
“exactly smart ass”

Elles leaned against the tree “So get to know me”

Jane stared at him for a second and Instead of answering, she turned the page in her notebook and kept writing.

Elles didn’t leave

And somehow, that was more surprising than anything else.

Jane kept waiting for him to get bored, But instead, he just leaned against the tree, watching her like it was the most natural thing in the world.

“You know,” she finally said, not looking at him, “staring at people is kind of weird.”

“Not staring,” Elles corrected. “Observing”

Jane rolled her eyes. “observing what?”
“You bite your lip when you write. You tap your pen three times before starting a new line. And you pretend you don’t notice when people are looking at you, but I'm sure you do”
That made her pause.
She looked up, meeting his eyes, and for the first time, she felt seen

Which was dangerous to her

She closed her notebook  “Shouldn’t you be with your actual friends?”

Elles smirked. “Who says I have actual friends?”

Jane scoffed. “ Collen You have a fan club

He laughed while answering  “Fans aren't friends

Elles then broke the silence “so what are you writing about? ”
“ finishing the unfinished song” she said calmly

“Sing it to me.”

Jane gave him a fake smile and said “Not happening”

Elles laughed“Why?”

“Because I don't know you” she said it again

“So?” He leaned closer, his voice teasing. “Maybe you should get to know me”

Something about the way he said it jokingly but serious made her heart race

And that was a problem.

A very big problem.

Pov elles:

Elles didn’t know why he stayed

He could’ve go back to his  routine sitting with his teammates, listening to whatever school drama waiting for the start of practice.

But something about Jane Morgan made him pause

She wasn’t impressed by him. She didn’t care about football, didn’t  look at him like some kind of legend.

He spent the rest of the day thinking about her

And later that night he found himself picking up his phone He hesitated for half a second.

Then, before he could talk himself out of it, he texted her.

Elles: Tell me something interesting.

5 minutes passed

Just when he thought she wouldn’t reply, his phone vibrates

Jane: Interesting how?

Elles smiled

Elles: Surprise me.

This time, she replied almost instantly.

Jane: I hate the sound of balloons popping

He blinked.

Then, without thinking, he texted back.

Elles: …That’s the most random thing I’ve ever heard.

Jane: You said surprise you..

For some reason, he found himself smiling at his phone

And for the first time in a long time, he wasn’t thinking about football.

He was thinking about her...
