I breathed heavily, hands shaking, red around the knuckles. I curled my fist back up, gritting my teeth as I lunged for another hit on the bricked wall.
"Avery."
My fist sank into something stiff but soft. I blinked. Piercing grey eyes met my gaze.
"Grayson." I breathed, chest heaving. His warm hands gently wrapped around my curled fist. I wretched it away quickly, heart quickening.
"Are you okay?" Grayson's hand fell back to his side, hesitated, and took a small step towards me.
"I- I just need a moment." I curled and uncurled my fingers, unable to tear my gaze away from Grayson's intense eyes.
"Anything I can do to help?" His cold eyes burned with a passionate flame I couldn't quite name.
"You, in fact, can help me get rid of this wall." I narrowed my eyes, offering a strained smile, grateful towards the redirection back to the game.
"Oren, we need a sledgehammer please." Grayson tucked his hands into his side pockets, calling to my security detail, who stood as still as a statue a couple feets away. I blinked and Oren had already disappeared into the shadows of the Hawthorne House.
Grayson tracked Oren through the darkness for a few heartbeats, wind tousling through his light-coloured hair before he turned back towards me. "Well Avery, remember, I'll always be here for you, tell me whatever you want, whenever you need." He gave me a small nod, I didn't miss the small strain in his voice nor the tight set of his sharp jaw.
A small breath caught in my throat. "Okay." Grayson Hawthorne promised to protect me, and that was a promise he will never break.
