Lucas Trent had left Elmwood five years ago, chasing his dreams in the fast-paced world of finance. The small, quiet town with its creaking streets and faded houses seemed like a distant memory now. But when his father passed away, the pull of home became undeniable.
He thought returning would help him find some closure, some semblance of peace. What he didn’t expect was to return to the town with more questions than answers—chief among them: What happened to Chloe?
Chloe Sinclair. The girl who’d stolen his heart when they were just teenagers, the girl he’d promised he would always come back for. They had big plans together. College, travel, maybe even forever. But just before graduation, she disappeared without a trace.
Lucas had never stopped looking for her. But the search was slow, fruitless, and eventually, life had moved on, even for him. Until now.
After his father’s funeral, Lucas found himself wandering the town, the weight of unspoken words hanging in the air. The places they used to go together—the park bench by the lake, the small café with the crooked sign—seemed unchanged, but the people? They had changed. Most of the faces he passed seemed familiar but distant, as if they’d seen ghosts. He couldn’t shake the feeling that they were hiding something.
His first stop was the old general store, hoping for any news.
"Lucas, it's been years," said Mrs. Owens, the elderly woman behind the counter. "What brings you back to Elmwood?"
"Just... needed to clear my head," Lucas answered, trying to sound casual. "I was hoping you might know something about Chloe. I mean... she vanished after high school, and no one ever heard from her again."
Mrs. Owens stiffened, her eyes flickering with something that felt like fear, before she quickly looked away. "Chloe? Oh, honey, you should forget about that girl. Some things are better left in the past. Not everything in this town should be dug up."
Lucas felt a cold shiver slide down his spine. He tried pressing her, but she clammed up, and soon he left, no closer to understanding.
The next stop was the local police station. Officer Tom Davies, a man Lucas had grown up with, had been a good friend of his father’s. If anyone knew anything, it would be him.
"Tom," Lucas said, leaning against the counter. "I need to know about Chloe. You’ve got to know something. It’s been five years, and no one’s said a word. Why?"
Tom sighed heavily, running a hand through his short-cropped hair. "Lucas, I don't know what happened to her. We looked into it back then, but no leads. No signs. It's like she vanished. The thing is, it’s not just her. A lot of people... they don’t talk about Chloe anymore."
"Why?" Lucas asked, frustrated now.
Tom hesitated. "You remember that old mansion on the edge of town, right?"
"The one near the woods? Yeah."
"Well, word is, Chloe went out there right before she disappeared. No one knows why. People think maybe... maybe she found something. Something she shouldn’t have. You know how towns are, Lucas. People start whispering, and then things get weird. Real weird."
Chloe had always been drawn to mystery. She had a way of pulling him into her world of secrets, even when it terrified him.
"Where is it?" Lucas asked, a sense of urgency taking over him.
The next morning, Lucas drove out to the mansion. The towering structure loomed against the early morning sky, its windows dark, cracked in places, as if the house itself had grown old and weary with time. He could almost hear Chloe’s voice in his mind, teasing him, asking if he was brave enough to enter. They used to dare each other to explore places like this.
Pushing open the creaky gate, he walked up the long path to the front door, his heart racing. The air was thick with dust and silence, the kind that spoke of years of abandonment. It felt like the house was holding its breath, waiting for him to make the next move.
He opened the door, stepping into the dimly lit foyer. The place reeked of decay, but something else too. A familiar scent. He inhaled deeply—Chloe’s perfume. It was faint, but unmistakable.
He followed the trail upstairs, his footsteps echoing against the old wood. At the end of the hallway, he found a door slightly ajar. Inside, a room frozen in time greeted him—old books stacked carelessly, an antique vanity, and in the corner, a dusty photograph. It was a picture of Chloe and him, taken just days before she disappeared. His heart hammered in his chest.
Then, he heard it.
A faint sound—soft breathing.
Turning, Lucas found her. Chloe. She stood in the shadows, her face pale, eyes wide, as though she hadn’t seen the light of day in years.
"Chloe?" he whispered, disbelief and relief flooding him.
She stepped forward, her voice shaky. "You shouldn't have come. It’s not safe, Lucas. There are things in this town—things no one will ever tell you."
"What happened? Where have you been?" he asked, his heart aching to hold her, to never let go again.
She shook her head. "I... I can’t explain everything. But I was trying to protect you. You weren’t supposed to find out. There are secrets here, things buried in the town’s history. And they won’t stop until they get what they want. I’ve been hiding, Lucas. Hiding from them."
The air seemed to thicken around them as Chloe stepped closer. Her hand reached out to touch his, but just as their fingers brushed, a voice echoed from the darkness behind her. "She’s not the same, Lucas. Not anymore."
A man stepped into the light, his face cold, unrecognizable. But his eyes... those eyes—Lucas had seen them before. On the town's old mayor. The same man who had disappeared years ago.
Lucas turned to Chloe, his voice trembling. "Who is he?"
Chloe’s expression darkened. "You need to leave, Lucas. Please. Go. Before it’s too late."
But it was already too late. The mystery of Elmwood was just beginning to unravel, and Lucas had walked right into the heart of it.
And as the doors of the mansion slammed shut behind him, the last whisper of Chloe’s voice echoed in the night: "I never stopped loving you."
(this was the end of the first part, I'm not really sure if it's good but if people like it I'm gonna write a part 2)
