"This is war, Lyssa," my father used to say. War has surrounded me for as long as I can remember; I have never known a world without it. I often wake in the middle of the night to the sounds of air raids and bloodcurdling screams that leave my ears ringing for hours. When I walk the streets, I see the bodies of the fallen, with people stepping over them as if they mean nothing. When I look up at the sky, I can only see the black smoke left in the wake of the king's dragons.

Leaving this place has always been at the top of my list. However, all I see around me are mountains and valleys. I know it will take time to find more civilization, but there has to be something more out there. There must be more to this war that has persisted throughout my entire life.

Finding peace and tranquility is my plan. But running into Daxiphin, the king's son, was not part of it. Now, I must navigate this war and Daxiphin to ensure my survival if I want to continue with my master plan. I could run circles around the king's bear, but there is something about him that I can't quite identify. He's much more mature and, dare I say, handsome.

Growing up, he was... a chunky, blond-haired, blue-eyed mother's boy. He would pull my hair and then lie and say I did it to him. The king would punish me in front of my parents to set an example. But really, he wasn't all bad. When Philip SwordSwin hit me over the head, Daxiphin protected me. He was still a pain in my ass, and I definitely could have done without him, but I can't complain much.
