Bridget sat in the back of the classroom, her arms crossed and a scowl on her face. She hated Mondays, and she especially hated Professor Kim's lectures on social economics.
Just as Professor Kim was droning on about supply and demand curves, the school's principal, Mrs. Nakku, burst into the classroom.
"Excuse me, Professor Kim," Mrs. Nakku said, her voice dripping with an unsettling sweetness. "I have an important announcement to make."
Bridget raised an eyebrow as Mrs. Nakku began to speak.
"We've been given an extraordinary opportunity," Mrs. Nakku said. "A prestigious organization has offered our school a chance to participate in a revolutionary new program. It's called the 'SPONGY GAME'."
The classroom erupted into murmurs and whispers. Bridget's eyes narrowed.
"What's the catch?" she asked, her voice loud and clear.
Mrs. Nakku smiled, her eyes glinting with something unsettling.
"Ah, Bridget, always the skeptic," Mrs. Nakku said. "Let's just say that the students who participate in the SPONGY GAME will be given an opportunity to... redefine their futures."
Bridget's instincts screamed at her to be cautious. Something wasn't right.
As Mrs. Nakku finished her announcement, she dropped a stack of papers on Professor Kim's desk.
"Those who are interested in participating in the SPONGY GAME, please sign the consent forms," Mrs. Nakku said, her smile growing wider.
The classroom fell silent. Bridget and her classmates exchanged skeptical glances.
"I don't think so," one student said, crossing his arms.
"Yeah, it sounds fishy," another student agreed.
But then, Mrs. Nakku dropped the bombshell:
"The winner of the SPONGY GAME will receive a grand prize of 50.7 billion Ugandan shillings."
The classroom erupted into chaos. Students rushed to the desk, grabbing the consent forms and signing them wildly.
Bridget's eyes widened as she watched her classmates. Had they lost their minds?
But then, she felt a surge of greed. 50.7 billion shillings was a life-changing amount of money. She could pay off her family's debts, start her own business...
Bridget's hand seemed to move of its own accord, reaching for the consent form. She signed her name, feeling a shiver run down her spine.
What had she just gotten herself into?
Bridget rushed out of the classroom, feeling a sense of unease. She needed a minute to herself to process what had just happened.
As she entered the restroom, she was confronted by a group of her classmates. Their eyes seemed cold and menacing.
"Thought you were too good for us, huh?" one of them sneered.
Bridget tried to defend herself, but she was outnumbered. They pushed her against the mirror, and her head cracked against the glass.
Everything went dark.
When Bridget came to, she was lying on the floor, her head throbbing with pain. The restroom was empty, except for a small piece of paper near her hand.
It read: "You shouldn't have signed up for the game."
Bridget struggled to her feet, her head still spinning from the attack. She took a deep breath and tried to walk out of the restroom, but as she reached for the door handle, she heard the principal's voice booming through the public address system.
"Attention, students," Mrs. Nakku's voice echoed. "All students who signed up for the SPONGY GAME are required to report to the auditorium immediately."
Bridget's heart sank. She didn't want to go anywhere near the auditorium, not after what had just happened. But something about Mrs. Nakku's tone sent a shiver down
Bridget grabbed a face towel from her bag and wiped the blood off her face, wincing in pain. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. She couldn't let anyone see her like this.
With a newfound determination, Bridget headed towards the auditorium. As she walked, she noticed that the corridors were eerily empty. The only sound was the echo of her own footsteps.
When she arrived at the auditorium, she saw that the other students who had signed up for the SPONGY GAME were already seated. They looked nervous and anxious, but Bridget couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.
Mrs. Nakku stood on the stage, a sinister smile spreading across her face.
"Welcome, students," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I see you're all eager to begin. Very well, let's get started."
Mrs. Nakku's smile grew wider as she reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, black mask. She put it on, and her eyes seemed to gleam with an otherworldly intensity.
"Welcome, students, to the SPONGY GAME," she said, her voice distorted by the mask.
Suddenly, a hissing sound filled the air, and a mysterious gas began to seep into the room. The students looked around, confused and panicked.
Bridget tried to stand up, but her legs felt heavy, as if rooted to the spot. The gas seemed to be affecting her, making her feel dizzy and disoriented.
"What's going on?" someone shouted, but Mrs. Nakku just laughed, her voice echoing through the mask.
"The game is about to begin," she said. "And you will all play, whether you like it or not."
The gas grew thicker, and Bridget felt herself being pulled into a dark, vortex-like tunnel. She tried to scream, but her voice was muffled by some unseen force.
