Demetria

The day finally dawned—my eighteenth birthday. My phone buzzed relentlessly as greetings poured in from family, relatives, and friends. Despite the digital cheer, a knot of discomfort twisted in my stomach. As a staunch introvert, the thought of a grand celebration filled me with dread. I had insisted on a simple family dinner—something intimate and low-key. Yet, my uncle Tito had different plans for me.

About a week before my birthday, Tito called, his usual boisterous spirit evident on the other end of the line. "Clear your schedule, Demetria!" he exclaimed. "We're going out of town for your birthday salubong!" I resisted, my busy senior year demanding so much of my time and energy. But when he insisted, I found myself trapped in his exuberance, unable to say no. "I just want to rest," I thought, but it didn't matter. The plan was set in motion.
