An entity devoid of name and form floated in the vast expanse of the cosmos, feeling the weight of eternity threatening its existence. it had witnessed the birth and death of stars, the rise and fall of galaxies. But now, it craved something different—something more... human.
One day, while observing Earth, it noticed the bustling life of a small town called Meadowbrook. The laughter of children, the aroma of freshly baked bread, and the warmth of human connection drew it in. With a deep breath (not that one was needed), it made its decision.
In the early morning, a soft, otherworldly glow filled the restroom of a 24-hour McDonald's on the outskirts of Meadowbrook. Edwin Astrum, or rather the cosmic entity that would soon be known as Edwin, materialized out of thin air. The fluorescent lights flickered, and the air seemed to hum with energy.
It glanced around, taking in the stark, tiled walls and the distinct smell of fast food. This place had chosen for its anonymity and the fact that it was a hub of human activity, accessible at all hours. Its new body felt strange—solid and confined. It looked into the mirror, seeing his new, human form for the first time. Average height, brown hair, unremarkable features. perfectly ordinary. However, those who look closely might notice a faint, otherworldly shimmer in his eyes, hinting at his cosmic origins.
Edwin stepped out of the restroom, blinking under the harsh lights of the dining area. A few late-night customers glanced at him, but he went largely unnoticed. He approached the counter, fingers trembling slightly. "Uh, hello. Could I get a coffee, please?"
The young cashier, barely paying attention, punched in the order. "Sure thing. That'll be $1.50."
Edwin fumbled with the unfamiliar concept of money; his confusion evident on his face. The cashier hesitated for a moment, then shrugged and handed him the coffee. "Here you go, man. It's on the house."
Edwin took the coffee, and sat in a corner booth, feeling the warmth of the cup ground him, he let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. That was it—his first human interaction. The start of something entirely new.
As he sipped his coffee, he began to plan his new life. He would need a place to stay, a job, and a way to blend in. The cosmic knowledge he possessed would guide him, but he was determined to experience humanity without relying too much on his former powers.
The following days were a whirlwind of new experiences. Edwin found a modest apartment for rent above a bookstore. The landlady, a kindly woman named Mrs. Thompson, was more than happy to have a quiet tenant who paid in cash.
Mrs. Thompson saying warmly "Welcome, Edwin! It's not often we get new folks in Meadowbrook. If you need anything, just give me a holler."
Edwin nodded, grateful for the warmth in her voice. He was starting to see why humans valued community and connection so much.
Edwin's next challenge was finding a job. He wandered into the local library, drawn by the rows of books and the serene atmosphere. The librarian, Sarah, pushing back her shoulder-length chestnut hair noticed his curiosity and struck up a conversation. "You seem like you have a love for books. Are you looking for something specific?"
Edwin saying both timidly and yet matter of fact "Actually, I was wondering if there might be a job opening. I just... moved here and need work."
Sarah's smile brightened as she rearranged the books on the counter "Well, we could use an extra hand." her vibrant green eyes, full of curiosity and kindness darted around for something Edwin could help with. "How about you start by helping me organize the new arrivals?"
Edwin's heart (or what passed for one in his human form) leapt with joy. This was the start of something new, something he had longed for. He might have been an ancient cosmic entity, but now he was Edwin, the man learning to navigate the beautiful, chaotic world of humanity.
