"She must be sacrificed next Wednesday," the old woman declares, her voice sharp enough to slice through the night.
"Next Wednesday?" the man stammers. "But she's leaving on Sunday. She's leaving tomorrow! She won't even be here on Wednesday." He finishes his sentence, sweat beading on his forehead.
"I don't care," the Nadītu snaps. "I told you months ago-she must be here on the first day of spring. That's next Wednesday."
"But... but you know she's stone headed and no one can tell her what to do! What am I supposed to do?" he stutters, sounding as lost as he looks.
"IT'S YOUR FAULT," she yells, her voice echoing through the temple, sending ravens flapping into the night and cats scurrying into the shadows. "She was never supposed to see all that. YOU were supposed to sedate her".
A tense silence settles before the Nadītu speaks again, her voice now calm but deadly. "Listen. We need Marduk's blessing to survive. The town is dying" she takes a step closer and look him dead in the eye "So Either you figure it out, OR you will take your niece's place."
The Nadītu waves her hand, signaling for the man to leave, he bows to her and walks away murmuring under his breath, lost on what to do.
They thought they were the only ones there, but the walls had ears.
