The coffee shop buzzed with its usual morning hum—baristas shouting out orders, the soft clink of cups, and the low murmur of conversations. Camille took a sip of her cappuccino, savoring the moment before her friends arrived. This café was their little corner of sanity amidst the chaos of their lives, a ritual they rarely skipped.
Renée was second to arrive, rushing through the door, her scarf flying behind her. She dropped into the seat across from Camille, cheeks flushed from the brisk wind outside.
"I swear," Renée said, catching her breath, "traffic gets worse every day. Or maybe I just can't seem to leave on time anymore."
"You're always late," Camille teased, stirring her drink.
Renée rolled her eyes, shrugging off her coat. "What's your excuse for being so early, then?"
Camille shrugged, her lips curving into a small smile. "I like to enjoy my coffee in peace before you two start bickering."
"Bickering? I don't bicker," Renée said, feigning offense.
Before Camille could reply, the door opened again, and Elise waltzed in like she owned the place. She was dressed to kill, as usual—leather jacket, sky-high boots, and a confidence that turned heads.
"Sorry I'm late," Elise announced, sliding into the booth next to Renée. "I was busy with important things."
Renée raised an eyebrow. "Important things? Like what, flirting with your landlord to get out of paying rent again?"
"Excuse me," Elise said with a grin, "but I'm not behind on rent this month. Thank you very much."
Camille shook her head, laughing softly. "You're impossible."
"That's why you love me," Elise quipped, flipping her hair over her shoulder.
The three of them fell into their usual rhythm, chatting about everything and nothing. Renée shared updates about her parents, her voice tinged with worry. Elise complained about her dwindling allowance and the audacity of her parents' sudden financial discipline. Camille listened, chiming in here and there, careful not to let on about her own struggles.
It wasn't until later that evening, at the party, that Camille's world took an unexpected turn.
The venue was upscale—far beyond what she could normally afford, but she'd managed to snag an invite through a classmate. The music pulsed through the room, the champagne flowed freely, and everyone looked like they belonged in a magazine spread.
Camille was nursing her drink, scanning the room, when a woman about her age approached. She was stunning, with perfectly styled hair and a dress that screamed money.
"You're Camille, right?" the woman asked, her smile warm but calculating.
Camille hesitated. "Yeah, I am. Do I know you?"
"No, but I've heard about you," the woman said. "From Sarah. She said you're sharp, ambitious, and... looking for opportunities."
Camille tilted her head. "Sarah might have exaggerated."
The woman laughed. "Maybe. But I'm not exaggerating when I say I have something you might be interested in. Something exclusive."
Camille's curiosity was piqued, but she kept her tone neutral. "Go on."
The woman leaned in slightly, lowering her voice. "There's a club. Not the kind you're thinking of a private one. Members-only, for the elite. They're always looking for the right women. Poised, elegant, driven. Women who know how to make an impression."
"What's the catch?" Camille asked, skeptical.
"No catch," the woman said, her smile unwavering. "Just an opportunity to change your life. If you're interested, meet me tomorrow at the café on Fifth and Main. Bring your friends."
Camille raised an eyebrow. "Why my friends?"
"Because this isn't a solo kind of thing," the woman said cryptically. "Trust me, you'll want backup."
With that, the woman slipped away, disappearing into the crowd before Camille could ask any more questions.
As Camille walked home that night, her mind was racing. She couldn't shake the woman's words or the strange feeling in her gut. By the time she reached her apartment, she'd made up her mind.
Tomorrow, she'd tell Renée and Elise everything.
