It had been nearly three weeks since Donald Mallard had watched his half-brother, Nicholas, be taken away from him and his father by the vile woman that was Nicholas' mother and Donald's step-mother. Three weeks since he had seen his one reason for living. Three weeks of a schedule he executed with machine like precision. Because what else was there to do without Nicholas?

Without that cheery eight year old, what did he have? He knows his mother loves him and his father tries his best, but Nicholas was all that made him happy. Well, that and--

Mallard's thought process was interrupted by a phone call from a relative he had talked to a week ago while looking for Nicholas. He immediately answered and put the phone to his ear.

"Hello, is this Donald Mallard?"

" This is he."

"I have news about your brother."

His heart stopped for a moment. Nicholas. He could see Nicholas again. The relative continued

"I received word from a local hospital last night that Nicholas and his mother were in a car accident. They're both dead. I'm so sorry, Donnie."

The call abruptly ended leaving Doctor Mallard alone with his thoughts. Completely and utterly alone.
