Sky leaned over his camera, his fingers brushing the lens as he peered through the viewfinder. It was an ordinary day in the city. Crowds shuffled by, unaware of the stories unfolding within their midst.
He’d always found beauty in the fleeting moments, the ones no one else noticed: a flicker of a smile, the tilt of a head, the tension in a hand. His world was a series of candid snapshots, frozen slices of life.
But that day, something changed.
As he wandered the busy streets, his camera clicked relentlessly, capturing faces of passersby. The sun was beginning to set, casting an orange glow over the horizon, when a stranger walked by. A man with a face Sky recognized, though he shouldn't have.
The man’s features were sharp, almost too perfect. His hair, platinum blonde and swept back, caught the last rays of light as if it had been designed to be photographed. Sky’s heart skipped a beat when he saw him. That face. The man in the frame was Sam. It was Sam, the whistleblower whose high-profile death had dominated headlines a year ago.
Sky quickly snapped the shot, the camera’s click barely audible over the noise of the city. But something about that moment didn’t sit right. He felt the chill of unease crawl up his spine. Sam had been a crucial figure in exposing corruption, but he’d been supposedly killed in a mysterious accident. The case was closed, or so everyone thought.
Later that night, Sky sat in his dimly lit apartment, developing the photograph. As the image materialized in the chemicals, his breath hitched. The man in the photo was unmistakably Sam. There was no doubt about it. But how? How was this possible?
“No way,” Sky muttered, staring at the image under the red light of his darkroom. It was him. There was no doubt. But Sam was dead. His death had been ruled an accident. A car crash while fleeing the country after exposing corruption in a government surveillance program.
Sky tried to dismiss it as a coincidence. But the unease in his gut didn’t let him sleep that night.
