The classroom fell silent as Charlotte worked, wiping down tables and stacking chairs. The hum of fluorescent lights filled the void, and for a moment, she allowed herself to feel the weight she always tried to push away.

This wasn't the life she had imagined. But it was the life she had.

For now.

The next morning, the air at The Knight Nursery buzzed with quiet anticipation. Reece had sent out a message the night before announcing a new hire, someone who, according to him, was "just the right fit" for the team. Charlotte sat at the low round table in the preschool room, helping a boy named Ethan glue paper stars onto a construction paper sky. She glanced at the clock, wondering when this mysterious new hire would arrive.

Marjorie, as usual, was the first to drop hints when she poked her head into the classroom. "Reece's old friend should be here any minute," she said, her tone unusually light, though Charlotte caught a flicker of something in her expression—was it tension?

"Old friend?" Charlotte asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Yeah, an old... flame, actually." Marjorie's voice was casual, but Charlotte could see her lips tighten slightly.

Charlotte frowned. "And you're okay with that?"

Marjorie gave a small shrug. "It's ancient history. Reece told me she's great with kids and that we'll love her."

Before Charlotte could press further, the sound of the front door opening and Reece's voice filled the hallway.

"You're here! Come meet everyone," he said warmly.

Charlotte turned her head toward the door as a tall, striking woman walked in. She had dark hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail and a sharp, angular face that was softened only slightly by her piercing green eyes. Dressed simply in a black blouse and dark jeans, she carried herself with the kind of quiet confidence that made people turn their heads. Her expression, however, was unreadable—stoic and calm, as if nothing could ruffle her.

"This is Mia Roberts," Reece introduced her to the staff gathered in the hallway. "She'll be joining us full-time. Mia and I go way back."

Marjorie stepped forward and shook Mia's hand, her smile polite but measured. "Nice to meet you. Reece has told us a lot about you."

"All good things, I hope," Mia replied, her tone dry but not unkind. She glanced around, her eyes briefly landing on Charlotte, who suddenly felt the need to smooth down her blouse.

"This is Charlotte," Reece said, motioning toward her. "She's one of our lead teachers in the preschool room."

"Nice to meet you," Charlotte said, extending her hand. Mia's handshake was firm but not crushing, her eyes steady as they met Charlotte's.

"Likewise," Mia said simply, her voice low and even. She didn't smile, but something about the intensity of her gaze made Charlotte's stomach twist uncomfortably—though she wasn't sure if it was in a good or bad way.

As introductions wrapped up, Reece assigned Mia to shadow Charlotte for the day.

"She'll learn the ropes fastest with you," he said. "Plus, you're great with the preschoolers."

Charlotte nodded, hiding her unease. She wasn't sure why Mia's presence unsettled her, but there was something about the woman's calm demeanor that felt like a challenge.

The morning went smoothly enough. Mia worked quietly alongside Charlotte, observing more than engaging at first but stepping in when needed. She seemed competent—quick to notice which children needed extra attention and adept at handling small outbursts without raising her voice.
