Shattered mirrors

The rain fell relentlessly against the cold streets of Yokohama, the sound almost deafening as it splattered against the windows of the abandoned building. Inside, only the dim light of a single lamp illuminated the faces of two men who had long since become strangers, despite all they'd been through together.

Dazai leaned against the wall, his usual playful smirk nowhere to be found. His eyes were distant, reflecting the turmoil brewing within him, the sorrow he rarely let anyone see. He stared at Chuuya, who stood across the room, arms crossed, the usual fire in his eyes replaced by something darker. A sharp tension hung between them—broken promises, unsaid words, and a betrayal that neither could escape.

"You know, Chuuya," Dazai finally broke the silence, his voice quiet, almost hollow. "I never wanted it to come to this. But... maybe we're better off this way."

Chuuya's sharp, bitter laugh cut through the heavy air like a blade. "Better off? Don't kid yourself, Dazai. You've never cared about anyone—least of all me. You just used me, like you always do." His voice cracked, the words stinging both of them.

Dazai's eyes flickered, a flash of guilt quickly masked by his indifference. He took a step forward, but Chuuya raised his hand to stop him. "No," Chuuya snapped, his voice raw, "I'm done. I'm so tired of being your damn second choice, your backup when everything else falls apart."

Dazai's heart twisted, the weight of Chuuya's words crushing him in a way he hadn't expected. The truth was that he'd always known how much Chuuya meant to him, but he never allowed himself to admit it—not fully. He'd pushed him away, over and over again, believing it was better that way.

But now, looking at Chuuya's face—so full of anger and pain—he couldn't deny it any longer.

"I never wanted to hurt you," Dazai said softly, almost pleading, his voice breaking for the first time. "I... I thought I was protecting you by keeping you at a distance. But I was wrong."

Chuuya's gaze faltered, but he quickly looked away. "It's too late for regrets, Dazai," he muttered, stepping back. "I can't keep waiting for you to figure out what you want. I've been there too many times before."

For the first time in what felt like forever, Dazai's smile faltered completely. The empty space between them had never felt wider, and no matter how much he wanted to close the gap, he couldn't. The weight of his own mistakes had finally broken them.

Chuuya walked toward the door, his steps heavy. "Goodbye, Dazai," he whispered. And with that, he was gone, leaving only the rain and the deafening silence to fill the space where they once stood, shattered by the weight of words they could never take back.

Dazai stood frozen in the center of the room, his hand still hanging in the air, as if he could somehow stop Chuuya from walking away. But the door clicked shut with an almost finality that echoed in his chest, the sound reverberating through the hollow space between them.

For a long moment, Dazai remained still, the sting of Chuuya's words still raw in his mind. He wanted to move, to chase after him, to apologize, but every step felt like it would only make things worse. His mind was a blur of confusion, self-loathing, and an aching emptiness he could no longer ignore.
