Chapter One

"John. John wait!" I scream at him as he runs into the garden. He stops and turns to wait for me. Even in the night I can see his carmel colored eyes twinkling with mischief.

"Shh, Wendy. We have to be quiet. Or else they'll hear you." He grabs my shoulders, gently hiding me behind a bush.

"Who'll hear me John?" I asked looking up at him

"Who?" He questions me. Mocking my little knowledge. "Oh, Wendy. Why the evil pirates of Neverland!" He comes close to me putting his arm around my shoulder and pulling me towards his side. "Don't you see it Wendy?" He asks while staring out into our garden. At this time of the night you can hardly see anything. Just figures of darkness. I concentrate hard on the darkness surrounding us but don't see anything. At last i gave up.

"See what John?" I ask defeated.

"The pirate's ship!" He screams with excitement. "Hurry we've got to help Peter!" He laughs while starting to run again. I try to keep up.

"John. Who's Peter?" I ask him as soon as I can reach him. He turns toward me smirking. He grabs my hand and gently pulls on it until I'm facing a stump. He nods his head, registering for me to sit down. Once I'm seated he begins.

"Wendy, what's the thing all children are eventually supposed to do?" He asks me. Crouching in front of me. Even in the dark I can see his white, glistening smile.

"Grow up and become adults?" I ask. Recalling my mother telling me that I'd make a fine wife when I grew up and got married.

"Yes! Exactly." He exclaims, "so what if I told you that all children grow up" he pauses then leans into my right ear and whispers, " except one." He suddenly springs to his feet laughing.

"Imagine Wendy. A place where you don't ever have to grow up. Where there are fairies!" He throwbacks hands up to mimic wings and pretends to fly.

"Fairies John?" I ask excitedly. My eyes widening as I wonder.

"Yes! And mermaids! And Indians!" He puts he pointer finger on his head to mimic and indian's feathers and begins to dance around. I laugh at his silliness.

He smiles when he hears my laughter. But suddenly he stops.

"Oh no! They're here. Come on Wendy we've got to help the lost boys!" He grabs my hand and pulls me to my feet. Tugging me to the center of our yard.

"Lost boys John?" I ask in confusion once we reach the patio, copying John as he hides behind a chair.

He gives a throaty laugh, looking at me excitedly, "The Lost Boys! Why Wendy, what wouldn't I give to be a lost boy. They're Peter's right hand men! Well...boys. And with the help of Tinkerbell's fairy dust they can fly Wendy! Like Peter!" He yells, his light eyes brightening with wonder. Then as if remembering something he gasps and looks around. "Oh no,they heard us Wendy!" He stands up straight taking out a toy sword. From his belt he hands me another one.

"What's that for?" I ask. Eyeing the plastic weapon he's holding out to me.

"How else are you supposed to fight against the pirates?" He says lifting an eyebrow at me.

"Oh John!" I take the toy from his hands, staring at it in amazement.

"Okay Wendy, you have to always fight back no matter what. I won't always be here to protect you. Though I promise I will do everything I can to keep you safe." He says, " Remember Wendy, you have the power to protect yourself. Don't be afraid." He looks down at me and then back to the garden.
