"You seem distracted today."
Delta glanced down at the phone in his hand, staring at the unfamiliar screen and clunky size. He weighed the words in his head before he spoke.
"Just tired," he mumbled. That was far from the truth.
"Uh huh," the voice crackled over the phone. He still got spotty connection now and then. "You suck at lying to me."
"Not my fault you're a psychic witch," Delta said. His eyes wandered away from the phone and down the street he was walking. He didn't recognize anything in sight, the city of Toronto was still a winding maze to him and he hated that.
"Okay you are really out of it," her voice carried grave concern. "What's up?"
Delta held his tongue. What was wrong with him? He had wanted to get out of Isaac's house as quickly as he could that morning. Delivering Isaac's phone to him didn't help Delta's plans any but that wasn't what was bothering him.
Delta turned into a dark alleyway, his hands running along the alleyway wall, feeling the thick walls and shuffling his feet along the ground as he thought. His eyes wandered up to the sprawling height of the building. His eyes lingered on the lip of the roof above and his breathing quickened as he understood.
"I feel trapped," was his answer.
"Ooooookay......" she responded. He could hear her nails tapping the table even through the phone. "Trapped how?"
Delta sighed and kicked the glass bottle at his feet. It shattered at his touch and glass splayed about. Broken... just like him. "I didn't realize how being on the ground would make me feel so chained down."
He looked up to the heights again. "I want to be up there, Jenna."
She was silent for a bit. He could hear the gears in her head turning.
"I'm sorry," she sighed.
"I know and... thanks."
He gentle fingered the stitches covering the small section near his spine. Letting the dull pain of touch and disappointment ripple across his back.
He left the alleyway and continued down the street, though his feet took him to a different path. He let his sense of direction guide him. Down the streets and across the roads as he made his way back to the house. People walked nearby, stumbling teenagers drunk on alcohol, squealing children tugging on their parents hand to point to the glass windows filled with wondrous gadgets. The city was on fire with noises of chattering and the roar of engines. Delta often lost himself in the noise. He closed his eyes and tried to envision himself away from the confines of the sidewalk and the lines he was forced to walk. There was no freedom down here, he realized, not like above.
He tried to envision the span of rooftops before him, the various paths he envisioned in his mind. His legs felt the sudden urge to spring through the air and the rush of adrenaline as the ground gave way to air.
Delta stumbled.
"Watch it fox!" A large male bull shoved him. Delta nearly lost his balance.
"Sorry sir," Delta mumbled as he fixed his hood over his head.
"Dumb fox," the bull angrily said back and added a few choice words along with it.
"Sounds like a lovely man," Jenna chimed in. Delta had forgotten she was there. "Are you listening or should I make an appointment for your attention?"
"I'm here," Delta said. "Sorry."
"Good. I assume you weren't paying attention earlier?" Jenna didn't give him a chance to answer. "Thought so. I was asking how you were settling in?"
Delta rolled his eyes and shoved his hand into the pocket. If he hung up how mad would she get? "Alright, I guess."
"Care to elaborate?"
"There's not much to say," Delta said. He glanced down the street towards the house looming down there.
"Tell me about Isaac and Dante then!" Jenna huffed. "I haven't heard a peep about them from you."
"Maybe I don't want to talk about them!" Delta snapped.
"Maybe I don't care whether you want to or not!" Her voice changed suddenly, and Delta could almost feel the sly smirk crossing her face. "I could hack into their pho-"
"NO!" he cried, bringing the phone closer to his face. "Don't you dare!"
"Oh I dare," she said slyly. "Spill."
Delta groaned. Knowing Jenna she had probably already hacked into both of their phones at this point and quite possibly every other phone in a ten mile radius. "Isaac is....."
"Is......?"
"He's a tech guy and pretty good at it," Delta started. "He's tall, handsome and wears a ridiculously large coat."
Jenna was silent.
"That's it?!?"
"He also works for Argus...." Delta clenched his fist and felt his teeth grind together as he spat out the last word.
Jenna went silent again for a much longer time. "I see."
"Now you understand why I'm not exactly sure about him," Delta said, rubbing his forehead as if it would release his anger somehow. He flexed his fingers as he neared the front of Isaac's house.
"What about Dante then? Do they work for Argus?" Jenna's voice was going softer.
"It's a he and to answer, no. He's just a writer." Delta glanced through the window. He could see Dante's ears peeking around the corner leading to the living room. "I'll have to let you go I'm heading in."
"Alright," Jenna said. Her voice took a sharper tone. "You better call me. Soon!"
"It's a promise."
