Carmella Nicole Rays "Mel"

My hands were uncontrollably shaking from the news. "I said Yes," I exclaimed looking over onto the passenger seat. Matthew nodded. "Yes you did." I blushed as drove down the dark winding road. "We're getting married," He smiled of genuine happiness. Matt and I had only been dating for six months but I knew he was the only man for me.

He treated me differently from my relationships in the past. I never was confused on where we stood in our relationship. I was his only, and I knew it.

Matt made me feel secure and loved most of all. It also didn't hurt that Matt was handsome. He had beautiful butterscotch skin tone, that was accompanied by freckles. He was tall and towered over me.

"We should get married right away," I oozed overcome by excitement. I glanced at my ring. "Watch out," Matt exclaimed as a shadowy figure of a dog appeared on the road.

At the last second, I attempted to swerve. I barely had time to scream as the airbags knocked me back and sideways. My body jerked to the dashboard, colliding with the windshield. "Matt," I screamed unbuckling my seatbelt.

"Matt," I called out once more, looking at the tree we had hit. "I'm fine, I'm fine," He replied jumping out of the car, frantically calling 9-1-1. "Is the dog I hit dead," I asked. "Mel," He exclaimed.

"Baby." "That wasn't a dog."

"I don't want to stay there," I spat frantically looking through my purse for money. "I cannot stay there," I said into the phone.

"Our home," Matthew asked on the receiving. I huffed as I paid the taxi driver.

"Mel, I'm starting to think you don't want to be with me." I scoffed. "You postponed the wedding, now all of a sudden you need to take a trip," He asked. "Baby-," I started. "Is it," He started.

"Is it another guy," He asked. I gave him a light chuckle. "No," I exclaimed. His idea was absurd. I loved him. "No, Never," I reassured him. "I just need to do this," I exhaled.

"Ever since the accident, I been feeling like Im in a dark place," I tried my best to explain. "And I just need to get myself out, it's nothing you can do." "Its something I need to do." "Ok, baby just know I'm supporting you," Matt said. I smiled, see this is why I loved him.

"I Love you," I blew a kiss into the phone. "Love you too," He said hanging up. I got my bags out and sat them down.

"Home," I said to myself looking around at the boarded up apartments. Much hadn't changed since I was a teenager. It was still the same roach infested projects, I grew up in. I headed up the steps to apartment number 5 and gave a light knock.

"Mel," Tyra exclaimed pulling me into a warm embrace. Tyra and I hadn't done a great job of keeping in touch with each other over the years. We both understood we were busy though so sometimes the phone calls came less. We both took different paths so sometimes it was hard to communicate, but whatever happened, she was still like my sister. "Or should I say Mrs. Hall," She said grabbing my hand. She smiled pointing to my ring. "Oh my god, we have so much to catch up on," I shrieked full of excitement.

A fur ball came running towards me. I chuckled at the toddler with her untamed jet black curls rushing around the apartment, holding her sippy cup tightly. "Ashton," I exclaimed. "M-Mel," She exclaimed back in the same tone, tugging at her Minnie mouse pjs.

"Did you and Ari not have protected sex," I asked from outside Corky's bathroom. Silence. "Girl I always make Corky wrap it up," I lied. Truth be told, Corky never used a condom. He always claimed "It feels better without." I just couldn't let my girl know I was out here like that. "because he know I aint ready for no babies," I added. More lies.

"Well me and Ari aren't you and Corky. Okay?" Tyra hissed. "I was stupid and now I have to wait for this." I heard sniffles coming from the restroom. "Oh my god, I'm going to be sick," Tyra said rushing out and leaving her test on the counter. She ran to the trash can that was in the corner of my bedroom. "D*mn Tyra," I twisted my face, seeing her puke her brains out. "What does it say," I finally asked. "I'm pregnant," She cried.

Whenever I saw Ashton, It was like looking at Ari with long hair. "Girl give me a hug," I scooped Ashton up in my arms. "

H-hug," She stuttered. "Girl, you look just like your," I started but was stopped by Tyra giving me a glare. "D-A-D-D-Y," I spelled as Tyra narrowed her eyes at me. "You still haven't told him," I asked. She shook her head no. "Tyra," I sighed.

"He deserves-," I started. "Every time I try to write him I just decide that's not the right way to tell him," She interrupted pointing to the stack of letters on her counter.

"Hey, sorry I broke up with you. I was pregnant, you have a kid," She whispered mocking. I bit down on my lip.

"There is no right way to tell him, just have to do it before she gets any older," I advised. She huffed. "Look the back room is all yours," She changed the subject. "

Me and Ash are going to go get you some sheets," She said scooping up Ash and putting her on her hip. I furrowed my brows, looking at the stack of letters.

"She's going to thank me for this later," I gripped the letter on the top tightly, before strutting out.
