Riley Davis sat at her workstation in the Phoenix Foundation, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she sifted through data for their latest mission. The familiar hum of computers and the soft chatter of her teammates filled the air, creating a comforting backdrop to her work. It was just another day at the office, or so it seemed.

Mac leaned over her shoulder, his presence a constant source of reassurance. "Any luck pinpointing the location of that weapons cache, Riles?"

"Almost there," she replied, her eyes never leaving the screen. "Just need to crack this last firewall and we should have the coordinates."

As Riley delved deeper into the encrypted files, a string of code caught her eye. It was an oddly familiar pattern, one she hadn't seen in years. Suddenly, the world around her began to blur, the present fading away as memories she'd long suppressed came rushing back.

She was 12 years old again, sitting in a dimly lit room, hunched over a secondhand laptop she'd pieced together from parts she'd scavenged. The foster home was quiet, too quiet. Riley's heart raced as her fingers moved across the keys, desperately trying to erase any trace of what had happened earlier that day.

The sound of heavy footsteps approaching made her freeze. She quickly shut the laptop and shoved it under her bed, just as the door creaked open.

"Riley?" The gruff voice of her foster father, Frank, filled the room. "What are you doing in here?"

"Nothing," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "Just... reading."

Frank's eyes narrowed, scanning the room suspiciously. "Didn't look like reading to me. You better not be messing with any of that computer stuff again. You know how I feel about that."

Riley nodded, her gaze fixed on the floor. She could feel the weight of his stare, the tension in the air thick enough to choke on.

"Remember our little talk," Frank said, his tone laced with menace. "Not a word to anyone about what goes on in this house. You wouldn't want to end up back in the system, would you?"

The threat hung in the air long after he left the room. Riley's hand unconsciously moved to her side, where a fresh bruise was forming beneath her shirt. She bit her lip, fighting back tears. She had to be strong. She had to find a way out.

As the memory faded, Riley's hand instinctively moved to her left side, tracing the outline of a scar hidden beneath her shirt. The raised tissue was a constant reminder of the night everything had changed, the night she had finally found the courage to fight back.

It had been a typical evening in the Delgado household. Frank had come home drunk, his temper already simmering. Riley had tried to make herself invisible, but it wasn't enough. A misplaced comment, a roll of the eyes, and suddenly Frank was in a rage.

What followed was a blur of pain and fear. Riley remembered the sharp edge of the coffee table as Frank shoved her, the sickening crack as her ribs gave way under the impact. But it was the glint of the broken bottle in Frank's hand that stood out most vividly in her memory.

In that moment, survival instinct had taken over. Riley had lashed out, her small fist connecting with Frank's jaw with surprising force. The distraction had been enough for her to scramble away, ignoring the searing pain in her side as she ran.

She had spent that night huddled in a park, pressing a wadded-up t-shirt against the gash in her side, too afraid to go to a hospital. It was then that she made her decision. She would erase herself from the system, disappear before Frank could find her or the authorities could send her back.

The scar that remained was more than just a physical reminder of that night. It was a testament to her resilience, her will to survive. But it was also a secret she guarded fiercely, a part of her past she had never shared with anyone, not even Mac.
