▬▬▬▬▬▬ JAHAENA knows, somewhere deep inside of herself where she is afraid to peer too deeply, that she is different from her siblings. Even as a child, she knows this. She finds some glass pane stuck between them, watches from behind a plane of diamond as Daenerys and Viserys glitter gold in the sunsweep of their parents' love. She realises too late that the crown on her father's sterling head will never belong to her, even though she is older than the other two.
And some bitterness, lodged inside her like a nasty black orchid, begins to flower.
It is so easy, Jahaena realises with a dark, cold thrill, to let herself fall to some wayside. To confine herself to shadows and spiderwebs and watch the silver dragons dance and play in the light. To ignore the way Rhaella's eyes sweep over her as though she were nothing, the way Tywin Lannister's jaw sets when he glimpses her, nestled between her siblings like a cavity in a perfect set of teeth, like a wilted rose in a gleaming flowerbed.
It is easy to let herself forget, even, her true mother.
There is a memory, of a woman with pink cheeks and hair like a healthy chestnut. There is a recollection like shifting sand of the smell of linen and powder, some place else than the Red Keep. But Jahaena's memories of that woman—her old life, and her true name—have been ripped from his, dissipating into time like the cresting of a lone wave.
Now all that is left behind is a wisp. A flash in a looking-glass, a fleeting movement of nostalgia, before it is swallowed up by her siblings' brilliance.
And Jahaena's fire begins to spark.
